Sounding that way John.

Any power on the connector when ignition on?

Right, update to this.. found what i thought/hoped the problem was. Broken wire from loom to connector.. cut other wire, soldered some new wire in taped all up, lovely jubbly i thought.. got approx 9 1/2 volts or so across the connector with electrics on so was at least getting something. So connected up .. checked rear lights.. nothing! :(

seems possibly the switch is goosed as i also checked for any voltage at the clusters , nothing:(

tried to remove switch.. would it budge? would it 'eck as like, so give it a quick squirt of easing juice and made a coffee. set to it with a pair of pliars and it turns and turns

and turns

and turns..

does the switch come out of the big nut its sat on/attatched to or do you have to remove the nut too?

The nut is part of the switch body, John. :)
(The plastic bit shouldn't really turn)

Cheers Dave.. that'll explain the spinning then .. looks like a big spanner job ;)
im assuming it would be ok to drive the car with that out ? ie leaving the hole open so to speak? i would need to at least grab the part number off it and knowing some of our good friends at the local GSF, i would want to take it instore when getting a new one..

*EDIT just saw the bit about the plastic bit not turning.. ahh well I would say its goosed now then!!

Spoke to a lad earlier (a mechanic) who said that if you take off the connector, short the two pins across, put your elctrics on, (lights) you should get the rev. lights on as there should be voltage carried through the connector..i can see the logic in that, but dunno if it works

Its a beast to get off, as my sockets wont fit over the switch, and you have to use a spanner, but its a real issue trying to get the spanner somewhere to turn. With mine i found once you loosened it even just a millimetre it was enough to take it out by hand, i think the oil in the gearbox helps on that one.
