Easy to put a new switch in.

To test the switch...
Right on top of the gearbox.... (There are two electrical connectors, the rearmost one is the speed sensor.)

To check, pull the connector off, ignition on, see if there is 12v across the connector (there should be)

Secondly, out of gear, then see if there is infinite resistance across the switch terminals. Then, stick it in reverse, there should be minimal resistance. If there is still infinite resistance, the switch is goosed.

sorry i went all gangster for a moment lol

Yeah and gangstas dont have em cos their rudeboy innit, west side

Serious thing, i just did mine and i dont know if a previous owner changed the connector that goes onto the switch, but i ended up having to use a knife to cut off the two little plastic 'moulds' as they stopped them going into the connector.

Just in case anyone else has the issue.

My van is doing the same.

When you put it in reverse, you can see the lights flash on then go off straight away.

Common problem with the gearbox switch. Your best to take the switch out to write down the part number as there's a few out there and not all work.

I got mine from GSF, think it was only about five pounds, works fine, seems well built etc

Checked mine as the reverse lights have never worked since i got the car.. following what it says in the Haynes liarbook, im getting (with no electrics at all) naff on the switch in any forward gears, but the multi-meter beeps continuity when reverse is selected .. figure the switch is ok?.. bulbs are all ok..holders are fine ( have tried other complete bulb holder units and same issue). Damn! kinda tells me the issue is somewhere in the wiring ?!?!?!

dunno Dave, i was just out getting something out of my van and grabbed the multi while i was out there..will give that a try next, at least theat should tell me which side of the loom its likely to be.. be a decent idea to check for any voltage down at the rear end too, altho' as i said, ive swapped bulbs and the clusters, so
