This may be a debatable thread but I am looking into getting a remap and whether or not to declare it to the insurance company (which I would prefer to do for piece of mind but unfortunately it puts my insurance up by £900 (double) Just wondering what people think!

Declare Yes or No??

Im just annoyed as I thought I will buy a Cupra chip it and it will work out cheaper than buying a 200bhp car but its not worked out that way! Got my insurance cheap but I mean they quoted £150 to declare better brakes but surely that would drop the insurance!

I would declare it personally, I also got a quote from Neil @ Greenlight and had a better quote with mods than i did from directline as standard! (24 and 2 years no claims, 1 sp30 with mods £700 from just over £1k standard!)
TBH, you're not far off 21 so why not wait a few months and put the £900 towards better mods!

Edited to say there are better companies about anyway, keep shopping around and hopefully you'll get one cheaper than that

If you bought your car secondhand who is to say it wasnt already remapped when you bought it but the seller didn`t tell you.If you don`t know that it is remapped you cannot tell the rip off insurance company. ;)

This is true but I dont want to lose the cars worth over it but hey i do think £900 is steep especially as the mods arent actually covered so I dont know why I have to pay at all!

Why do these conversations always come up i wonder... People please.. are we all forgetting how inteligent we actually are as individuals. if you did happen to have an accident and you were to blame you could always remove the ecu within minutes and for all you know it got stolen. Or just say you never new it was remaped. At the end of the day they wont know unless you tell them. A Remap is know where near as obvious as an exhaust system or induction kit. Somone could give you a cupra to drive for the first time in your life and tell you its a certain BHP when its not... get me

i wouldnt :p

dont think i would own up to have it done ive worked in the trade for years and never heard of a smashed up car being put on the rollers or checked for an ecu upgrade..plus you can play dumb and say it must have been like it when you brought it

You could try an Insurance Company that are more 'accomodating' to people who want to modify cars?

I am with Admiral and i got a quote for a 25%+ increase (as i think thats what it will be) and they wouldnt cover it, with a 11-25% it will cost an extra £268 and that was when i only had about 5 months left that year

So with Admiral a 1-10% increase they cover and a 11-25% increase they cover but they dont cover 25%+ as far as i know! Dont qupte me on this as i may be wrong

I dont know what percentage increase a remap is as im sure it dependant on the remap you have, your age, your past claims etc but i would think its a good idea to cover it, even more so if your getting a 'custom' remap

I can understand not telling your insurance about a remap as its almost impossible to find (im gulty of that) however IF you had a crash and the car got checked by the inusrance people you would have no chance!! and im told they CAN recover the cost of the 3rd party from you if your insurance is void.
I know if i was you i would defo ttell them about the mods specially when you read your sig if they lift bonnet the insurance guy will LOL!!

Because its down to you to know, if you insure the car as standard, then the documents will show it as standard, but if anything happens and they find the remap, brakes, tints, wheels, anything that isnt standard.
Invalidated insurance, no pay out, insurance cancelled by the insurance company! Then try getting insurance, when you've been refused it for this kind of thing!

You best bet, is when planning mods, and prices, add in the insurance costs, because, the money you spent on tints, could have gone towards the insurance for a remap!
Its all sticks and roundabouts. But dont expect sympathy from the company if they find out it aint as its showing on their records.

If you cant afford it, dont do it!

If your suprised by uprated brakes increasing the premium, then you'll be shocked to find that a roll cage does also. Why? - Because bigger brakes doesnt mean safer driver, it means a possibility that these bigger brakes will be used from higher speed, and for later braking = not safer!
