Making about £600 and a years motoring's not bad. But I couldn't be hassled with the time spent on labour. I have no choice but attend work (emergency services) and need a car that works when I need it, that I know the history of, and am confident its going reliable/road worthy.
Once on the road, it never let me down once. And it did Stockport-Silverstone and back a couple of times. I was confident. If it wasn't for daft insurance prices I'd still have it now.

On the subject of owner's manuals, my owner's manual states my timing chain doesn't have an interval... ah yes, that won't be why we've seen so many 1.2 chains fail, even as early as 40k then.

Ah but my manual does state a service interval, so i follow it ;)

I bought it new, remapped it 3 months later with 6k on the clock and no issues with the belt, tensioner or pump but had the lot replaced at last service. The belt itself didn't look aged, cracked or anything so would have been surprised if it had snapped. I think if people have been doing engine work its quite easy, depending on what they are doing to catch the belt or contaminate with oil etc which could drastically reduce its life and cause it to fail.

However I know everything about my car as was happy to stick with the 80k in the book.
Don't get me wrong, i've bought cars in the past when I was younger, not known when or if the cambelt was done so had it changed immediately to be sure. In fact I did 2 or 3 myself but at 32 my backs not what it used to be lol

Had my cambelt and water pump changed at 67,000 miles. My mate who worked for vw, told me that they had 3 passats in with cambelts gone at 70,000 miles. Same engine as mine. Paid £ 280.00.

Coincidence how all 3 went at 70k. Considering how many thousands are on the road you will always hear horror stories but they are usually 3rd hand or hearsay so I'd take them with a pinch of salt ;)

Timing belts tend not to look particularly worn... the whole reason why my old Octavia broke it's belt is because while having a load of work done by the previous owner's garage, they refitted an old belt! Don't ever do that, once a belt has been stretched for any real length of time it cannot be removed and refitted.

Afterwards I inspected the belt, there was no fraying or damage, just one, clean snap in a particular area. So don't ever assume because the belt looks okay, it actually is.

Ahhhh isn't this what I said from the state when i stated knowing past history and after you mentioned turbo work etc I did state you have no idea what could have been disturbed lol
Had that belt not been removed and replaced with the same one (why on earth anyone would do that is beyond me!) then there's a fair chance it wouldn't have snapped when it did, don't you think?

At least u got it fixed and made money on it so turned out ok in the end for ya.

Difficult to say, I had a new one on order at the dealer anyway because it was the original belt on the car and was 8 years old so I was going to change it anyway. All I can say really was the belt was more likely to fail once it was refitted.

It makes me sick that all this work was done by a VW Specialist in Spondon. Specialist my arse.
