All done, great job but had a bit of an issue on one side as the piston reindeer wouldnt fit in as the pads had been allowed to wear too far. Bit of persuasive ignorance and all sorted now.
Had been advised not to use copper grease as it affects your abs somehow... Don't know how that could happen but anyway I went with a none metallic lub just incase.

Thanks for posting this guide . I hacve my leon rears to do soon, Just got discsand pads from Eurocar parts, at the moment 30% off all brake parts there , cost me £52 posted for the set. and they are Pagid and have the bolts and glue on the pads as well

This is really nice DYI guide, may I just ask you a question? What is the type of your rear brake caliper? Is it CI-38? Or can you please put here also the VW part number of the brake pads? I need to replace rear pads and rotors on my 2007 Skoda Octavia II, I also got 255*10 rotors, but I wanna be sure it can be removed without removing the caliper carrier.

fitted mine today. rear pads and discs cost me £64.00 from TPS, genuine VAG parts.

Great guide, on previous cars I'd just used clamps or tyre irons to force the pistons back but took your advice and invested in a rewind tool.
The pistons were quite reluctant to go back and had to stick a socket on the end of the tool with a wheel brace to get enough leverage!
There was no way it was possible to hold the caliper while turning so had to brace it back in against the holder.
One thing I found was that with every turn the rewind tool had to be turned in as well to ensure it braced against the plate, slowly but surely it did the trick and the job was done.
I'll also add that just when you think you have enough tools, the job proves you wrong; despite having trays full of spanners did I have a 15mm? course not. So out with the angle grinder and a few minutes later one of numerous 14mm became a 15mm :)

Did anyone ever get the part numbers for the back pads and discs? I am going to do my mk2 tdi so wouldn't mind comparing Oem with euro car parts etc!!

Great instructions

Great thread and instructions. Same for Leon mk1. Machine Mart do a similar tool for £12. Piston was too far out to use plate, so pushed against a narrow screwdriver shaft to start off the piston. Job done & thanks for the tips;)

Sounds like a stupid question but can anyone provide a picture of where to place axle stands on the rear of mk 2 leon as im not quite sure and dont want to damage anything

I used this in the end, jacked it up via normal jacking point then placed axle stand with cardboard on top under this.

I replaced the pads & discs on my Altea this morning, so took some photos while doing it. Here's the process from start to finish. The setup will no doubt be the same as the Golf-Jetta Mk5.

First up, the news pads & discs. I priced them from the local motor factors at just over £52 for some anonymous Chinese stuff, then a price from Euro Car Parts online for ATE brand at £77 delivered. Then I went to Trade Parts Specialist (TPS) and got genuine VAG parts for a shade under £70.00 (a good move in my opinion, and I'll tell you why later). TPS are VAGs own parts network so they're spot on for part numbers and prices.

TPS = NOT available to retail customers, how did you get the parts?

I have bought some stuff recently from tps for my tea without problems and I am not a trade customer.

Not sure if tps have changed their sales policy!!

Seems like a great guide and I'm doing this tomorrow but one question I have is regarding the bleed nipple. Does everyone need to do this? I'm confident in doing everything else but not sure on this part.

Any advice

I tend to go against convention and don't touch the bleed screw when replacing pads or discs and pads, though some time you will need to use it to change the brake fluid (very two years).

Ok thanks mate. Think I'll do the same and leave it alone. Confident in changing the discs and pads so will just do that. Purchased a wind back tool and some copper grease with the new pads/disc's. Just need to collect tomorrow from euro car parts and good to go.

Might be an odd question...... But I don't take hand break off or anything do I?
