Problem charging Cupra Leon Hybrid

Hello,
I am the owner of a Cupra Leon Plug-in Hybrid. Recently, I started noticing an issue with charging the vehicle. When I plug the charging cable into the car, nothing happens. Normally, I should hear the sound of the charging adapter locking in place, and the charging indicator light should turn on. However, in my case, there is no sound, and the light remains off.
If I try again after about 5 minutes (just unplugging and plugging the charger back in), charging usually starts without any issues, and the green light begins to flash.
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar issue and how this problem could be resolved.
Thank you for any responses and suggestions.

Hi Hoffie,

Are you using the granny cable or a ‘real’ charger?

It could be that you’ve inadvertently set a timer/delay on charging, or the charger‘s broken, or a problem with the car; at one point my Arteon would only charge to 50% on my wife’s profile, which, yet another software update at the dealer cured.

I also had either two or three replacement Shell Recharge/New Motion chargers, as they were so unreliable, and thought that the last one packed up…it turned out to be a 10 minute delay to check grid balancing before the charger started, after a firmware update I didn’t know about…would have been good to know this before I contacted Shell thinking that the charger was faulty!

Hope that helps.

I've had this happen only a handful of times on my home charger, it's such a rarity and resolved by removing and slotting back in again, that it's an insignificant niggle for me.

I've assumed it's been because I haven't shoved it in far/firm enough or maybe there had been water on the contacts within the bit you plug in.

I tried many times removing and reinserting the charger, but no luck. However, if I try again after, let's say, 5 minutes, it works. Strange. I also noticed yesterday that even if the car is charging fine (green light flashing), the charging stops if I move the charger slightly. It must be some kind of bad contact. Does anyone have a solution?

Contact the dealer buddy!

If all dealers weren't rubbish and didn't care only about money, I would never write a post here. That's why I'm writing here—to find some recommendations to fix my problem.

I wasn't saying that you shouldn't ask on the forum, as everyone who replies wants to help, but sometimes you get to a point when you need to seek professional advice...we're all just throwing ideas at you from our armchairs, without being able to investigate properly...EV's are complicated and with the problem you've got, the next logical step is to get it checked at the dealer.

If you think all dealers are rubbish, why buy such a complicated car?

I would never have another VAG PHEV due to it spending most of it's time in the dealer due to constant software problems and updates...amongst many other issues ;)

If you know some electrician ask him to check with digital multimetar socket and cable. Need to check input and output.
Maybe if you often roll cable on and off some wire loose contact in the adapter box.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago with my (7.5) Golf GTE. As you say, nudging the charge cable would cause it to stop charging, and some mornings, I’d find the car had stopped charging during the night. I tested the car, by using the “granny charger” for a week, and it charged flawlessly, suggesting it was a fault with my wall charger (an old Rolec charger). I changed the breaker in the Rolec, but it still kept happening.

It turned out, it was the charge cable itself. I bought a new cable online (heavy duty one, with the charge “plug” on one end, bare wires on the other) and fitted it into the wall charger, and it’s been flawless ever since. I’ve now got the Cupra, of course, and still fine. So I suspect your cable may be the issue. Try testing your car for a week with an alternative charge source, such as the “granny charger” or a public charger, to rule out a problem with the car. Good luck.
