Power steering headache

Trying to help my son fix his car, started off with intermittend PAS, light on dash with engine running which would clear after a few mins.

Taken to garage, codes read;

U111100 - Function restriction due to missing message - Passive, sporadic
01309 - Power steering control module - No signal

So far;
Have changed pump
Have changed battery
Have checked fuses above battery and all seem fine
We have not coded the new pump, but google suggests that the PAS should still work but a light remain on the dash?

All codes are clear, drove for 20 mins and no new codes.

Currently seeking a VCDS locally for a proper scan.

Does anyone have any thoughts? could it be coding issue?

never seen that error before, you probably have a wiring problem, also I think besides the fuse above the battery, there is one fuse inside the car that is for steering

when its a code issue the pump usually runs at a lower RPM providing less assistance and there is a light on the dash
when the coding is wrong the pump is always running at idle ~1000rpm, when everything is coded correctly the pump rpm increase up to 4000rpm according to the steering wheel movement and speed of the car, the lower the speed of the car the higher rpm is necessary for a effortless driving experience.

Is steering as stiff on idle as when engine is not running? If it is the same it indicates the pump is not running at all, then either you got a bad one or have fuse /wiring problem

Hi, steering may be a little better when engine running, hard to tell

I now have vag com........ my plan is......

Run vagcom diagnostics and dependant on error go from there
Check vagcom to see steering angle vs steering wheel
Remove bumper from front
Plug old pump in and take code
Plug new pump in and apply code
Search for any cable issues by bumper
search for any cable issues under battery tray

Do you have any other suggestions? or do you have any tests to check wiring issues? continuity checks perhaps

that would work... if the old pump can still connect to CAN, sometimes when they go bad you cant even connect to them

to discard a coding problem you could try this codes on the new pump 11211 and 10111 (those are the default codes for most ibizas)
if one of this code solves and steering is too light try to change the 4th number 11221 or 10121 (some ibizas come with codes ending with 21 instead of 11, I think FR but not sure)

Ok so update........

Using VCDS cleared all faults, power steering light went off, test drive. Sorted.

Used the car for a bit, then light back on again. VCDS as follows;

everything on that seems ok, except the voltage seems a bit high but no idea what could cause that

the most likely scenarios at this point are:

1 - contacts with the pump are not properly clean
2 - you have bad wiring
3 - the pump you got is also defective

where do you got the pump, I once bought one that had water inside, they have a hole inside the power plug and if they are not properly stored they fill with water and get damaged, which could be the case it worked for a bit and then failed....
also so you know the pump is taken from a car with high mileage it has 4276 hours of use but that alone doesn't mean its bad.

  1. Checked all wiring and happy with it
  2. double checked fuse on battery
  3. cleaned all contacts with electrical cleaner
  4. reset all codes
  5. topped up power steering fluid
  6. stuck battery on charger, charger went green and fully charged within 15 mins.

Pump still tempermental. Decided pump faulty........ not going to faff around, giving up. Car isnt worth enough to contine playing, son was going to part X it anyway.

Thanks for your help but we are giving up
