my average per tank is around 490 - 510 miles, easily 350 of them is on M-way where trip computer tells me i'm getting above 50mpg most of the time, i think what lets us down is probably the other 150 miles on boost around A-roads :funk:

If you want to feel the power, you got to pay for it with fuel

you can clean them with carb cleaner but it a case of you can/cant do it. i
if it is knackered disconnecting the MAF . if it runs better than its a good indication that its buggered, if it runs pretty much the same or worse then its good

yeah gotta agree with ya there mate it's all fun:p love the torque low down on these.not really worried about mpg, just mates seem to get more than me,thought i might have a underlying fault or issue. will see if new fuel filter makes a differance this week.

before we give any further advice you should give us some info on your drving habits.
EG, how ofted do you drive and how far? (is work 3 miles away or 30?)
type of roads used and typical speed. how much traffic?
any short journeys mixed in there.?

would you say you are a slow, average, nippy or fast driver?

be honest.

would agree with the above post, work 16miles away of which 11 on motorway 70mph rest dual carridgeway with islands at 40mph, do like to be first from lights but don't speed on motorway,so would say i'm a nippy driver, maybe just need to stay off boost abit more:(

you should be seeing around 48 mpg average on the comp with those types of road driving,as its not that far any thing over say 20 miles of m.way the average on mine seems to go up quite a bit after if im doing 65-70

Do some MAF logs?

You said you oil your panel filter, this can be quite bad on the MAF as the sensor gets a coating of oil on it so it can't read the air volume correctly.

I'd do some MAF and MAP logs, do you have the green or black temperature sensor? The black ones are a common fault on the VAG's - this can contribute to poor MPG too.

Engine oil? What do you use?

Any brake pads sticking?

Tyre pressures at 33psi when cold?

No dead bodies hidden in your boot?

bit of an update, taken dead bodies out the boot, [forgot about them] changed fuel filter, change maf, no pads sticking, no boost leaks as far as i can see, tyre psi is 33 checked weekly. not sure where the temp sender is so don't know if green or black. but still getting same mpg  [:@]

Cleaning the actual MAF. People also do clean the contacts are use dielectric grease on them to keep the contact good. There's some instructions either in a thread on here or linked to from a thread on here.

I didn't do it in the end. I was all set to - IPA at the ready - and then found my MAF was clearly brand new so I didn't waste my time.

Thanks for that. I cleaned the contacts about 6 months back with dia-electric grease so will look for some instructions on MAF cleaning, possibly in faq's. Also got the car in for service today so that may improve things.
