Pd150 timing

Just a quick question, what should a healthy PD150's timing be in VAG-COM?

Because mine is looking a little advanced but haven't got anything else to compare it to!

Could this be the reason for my lack of power?

Thanks,

I don't have an idea, but noticed on the pull down bar it doesn't list ARL engine. Might be irrelevant as i have not used vag-com as i can't get it working.

Muttley, thanks for the clarification, I realise that this graph does not apply to PD engines, I could tell from the lack of PD options to select but my question still stands, how can you then tell if someone has put the cambelt on wrong or slipped a tooth and is causing a high advance or high retard timing.

My PD150 has white smoke at startup and idleing, has had crap mpg since I got it, feels like its under fuelled goes through the rev range so quick without producing much power, hell my 110 ASV TDI was quicker and did better mpg and that had quite a few mods and that was running 167 bhp.

Thanks in advance.

In the PD engine the injector stroke cannot get out of mechanical synch with the inlet and exhaust valves because they are all driven off the same camshaft. Start and end of injection are determined electronically by the ECU activating the solenoid valve on each injector.

So if you think that the camshaft has not been properly aligned you need to check the valve timing, not the injection timing.

This is set mechanically, using the locking tools, at the time of cambelt installation. Cam and crank are locked and the camshaft pinion freed to float in elongated fixing holes while the new belt is put on and tensioned. Once correct tension is achieved, the camshaft pinion is locked to the cam to achieve the correct mechanical timing.

To check it you need to repeat the installation steps only without removing the belt.

Muttley,

That makes a lot more sense now.

Cheers for that, apologies for sounding dense, it's my first pd engine and had a common rail diesel before this.

Many thanks,

Try checking 004 and 013 measuring blocks. 004 is the timing, i believe it should be around 0, some say slightly above or below is better. See what yours is at. Also 013 is to do with injection balancing between the cylinders. On a warm engine they should all be the same on tick over, if one is out it could be due to low compression etc.

Thats the one, forgot what it was called.

Just re read, you say you have lack of power. Do a vcds log in 3rd to 4th gear from low rpm to high with foot to floor measuring maf req/ actual and boost req/ actual. Could be low boost due to leak or turbo vanes or could be faulty maf or egr valve stuck open.
