OK, an update.

Started stripping it apart today (see my thread "Job you wish you'd never started": http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=144095 ) :)

Got the waterpump out - and the plastic impeller is just spinning freely on the shaft. I'm amazed it was providing any cooling whatsoever.
It had only been in for ~20k miles too.
Now it has a nice new metal impellered one :)

just had a look at the "job i wish i hadn't started" thread .......

and i thought i had to remove a lot of stuff to change the cambelt on my ibiza

result it only being the water pump and not the head gasket !!!!

was the plastic impeller water pump bought from the dealer?

When the cambelt was last changed at 120k by a local garage (who tend to work mainly on VWs), they found the pump was leaking so changed it. Not sure where it came from. I'm lead to believe dealers still supply the plastic ones though ?

Bought the new one online here: http://www.water-pumps.org/VW-Passat-1-9-waterpumps.html

air -> You've changed a cambelt on a PD130 Ibiza ? What sort of work was involved ? (Probably getting another Ibiza again next year....)

me and a mate changed the cambelt, tensioner and water pump a mont or so ago!

took about 3 hours which included a few  tea breaks

mainly down to the stuff you have to take off to get the cambelt off

IIRC,
top boost hoses
alternator belt and bottom pulley
vacuum servo thingy  & water expansion bottle to get the engine mount off (remembering to support the engine ;))
cambelt cover (4 bolts, 1 is really well hidden!)

the water pump is 3 bolts
tensioner 1 bolt

both easy to remove & replace :D

on reflection not the hardest job, certainly not as involved as "jobs you wish you'd never started" , in fact looking at that thread, should be a doddle for you :p

my mate had a set of locking tools and we rotated the crank trying to find the holes for 5 mins or more and couldn't the hole

so we used typex  marking the crank pulley and casing, and also the cam pulley and head;)
