it can't be the lambda probes... or shouldn't be - they're narrow band & do nothing as soon as you're driving about. they're for MOT emissions only. (zero load)

new plugs (the right type), air filter, well serviced, fuel filter.

All the above assumes that the MAF & MAP are working correctly.

On our Ibiza cruising on the motorway we could get 350-380 miles / tank. a lot of it depends on driving style

MAF's don't always work from new. well worth logging.

Also check for leaks or kinks in your pipework

your decat will always smell slightly. There is no more cat on it, hence the fact you fail MOT without one.
It can increase you mpg slightly having this, but if I remeber correctly regular consumption should be around 35mpg? So then 20 is very low.

service will do it good: spark plugs and fuel filter is something which should be really changed regularly.

I ain't telling you thief!
As Mork says, I regularly get 350miles out of a tank. That is driving 85% motorway @ 80mph and 15% pottering around town.

On a long run and sensible speeds the 1.8T is quite a good little engine, I quite comfortably get 36mpg average out of it.

Driving it fast and hard I get something nearer 26-28mpg so...

Don't thrash it everywhere! :p
