Oily smoke coming from near turbo...

update.......

It's still smoking :(

looks like it is the oil feed line on the top of the turbo :(

got to leave the car for a couple of hours to let the turbo go stone cold before I can do what Wild Willy has suggested above to get access to the Oil Feed.......

one other question..... if I disconnect the turbo from the exhaust manifold, do I 'have' to replace the gasket when I put it back together? with it being a Sunday there's no chance for me to get one.....

You should replace the gasket to ensure a good seal. Andy don't inderestimate the time needed to gain access to the oil feed as some of those nuts will be quite tight especially the manifold to turbo ones. Soak all the nuts well with wd40 before you start, you'll be in trouble if you snap any bolts so take your time and slowly work them free if they apear siezed. Quite a few hours work ahead of you. You may want to leave it for a full day.

just spent 3 hours on it..... and have given up :(

got to the manifold/turbo bolts, managed to partially loosen 1 which started to tighten when I continued to undo it :confused:, couldn't even gain proper access to the 2nd, and the third one the socket jumped and looks like it has started to round the head of the bolt..... so rather than make it worse, I've stopped.

I know my limits, and to be honest this is well above me.

Also, couldn't even manage to budge the 'easy' one of the 3 bolts on the DP!

Going to see if JBS can fit it in this week, or one of the local main dealers.......

Not an easy job mate, but at least you gave it a good go. If the oil seals are shot, turbo dynamics will rebuild it for you into a hybrid form (300bhp+) for £425 plus vat. Has got to be a bargin and worth considering.

Had the R in with Willoughby Seat in Nottingham today for them to look at the oil leak....

The Technician has had a good look, and is pretty sure it's the rocker cover gasket at the rear above the turbo. Apparently there's a 'half-moon' which sits in the side of the block, and this is leaking.

Can understand it, as at high revs there's a lot of oil flying about inside the cam-cover which can find it's way out and the down on to the exhaust manifold where it then smokes.

Popped into TPS on the way home to pick up the gasket set, but they didn't have any in stock. However, according to their system Derby Audi have got 3 in stock ;) Will be giving tham a call tomorrow :)

Will post up over the weekend how I get on changing the gasket :D

spent 2 hours this afternoon stripping everything off the top of the engnie so I could get the rocker cover off, to then replace the gasket.....

I'd say it's a 4-spanner jobbie, using Haynes' spanner ratings!!! :lol:

I'm 100% sure that the gasket was the cause of the oil leak, as when I took the old one off, the 'half-moon' which is part of the gasket itself, was caked in oil on the 'outside' and the side of the head below where the half-moon sits was also caked in gunk.

didn't get any pics, but it's pretty self explanatory ;)

as for parts..... £24 for the cam cover gasket, and the cam-tensioner gasket :thumbup:

2 months on and it's been doing it again for the last few weeks :(

So, Saturday afternoon I spent a couple of hours stripping all the 'stuff' off the top of the engine to get to the turbo area.

When I changed the rocker cover gasket at Christmas, I didn't remove the turbo outlet pipe (TOP) as I didn't need to to get access.

So I removed it on Saturday, to allow me to see the turbo a bit better....... only to find that the 'heat-wrap' that protects the TOP was soaked in oil..... :confused:..... further inspection revealed that the TOP itself was split....

Jumped in Em's car and headed down to the local TPS place to pick up some new parts, arriving at 1.05pm, only to find they closed at 1pm !!! Dooh !!!

Option 2: Phone m0rk and ask for opinions/advice on a temporary DIY 'bodge'...... ended up deciding to wrap the TOP in Duck Tape (great stuff!) and then replace the oil soaked hear-wrap with good old kitchen foil !!!! ;)

Initial impressions are that it's cured the problem at last (he says.... touch wood!!) ;)

Going to pop in the local TPS tonight and either collect or order the genuine parts. If they come to more than £60 then I will be ordering an upgraded Silicone hose from Forge ;)

Looking on the Forge website, it appears that the TOP failing is a pretty come problem !!

When I had to get a SEAT one, before Forge did them, it was £78 from memory...

Just out of interest Andy, where did it split and roughly what mileage?

All the others I've seen (a fair few bearing in mind the charge pipes I've swapped) were on the inside, at the "back", at about 55-60k miles.

Will get some pics tonight if I remember ;)

It was on the 'front' on the side, and about 2" long. It had gone through both the inner and outer rubber, leaving just the 'webbing' inside holding it together.

Mine's done 73k now, but I reckon it must have gone at about 65k.
