Are you sure its the oil light not the emissions light

If so it could be the oil level sensor on its way out (yellow light)

Or it could be suffering from a blocked hose not pumping the oil up from the sump

We need to be sure which light we are all talking about, I think.

Which light, what colour (amber or red) and is it flashing or solid? Use this diagram for reference:

If it is the oil light (21) then solid red (with three beeps) would indicate a low oil pressure problem, which would need to be sorted before driving the car again.

Solid amber indicates oil level too low - which means that, like me, you have an oil level/temperature sensor in the bottom of the sump. I was surprised to find this on my car, but the Toledo was the top-of-the-range Seat in 2001 so I suppose they got all the bells and whistles.

If you've checked the dipstick and are sure you have sufficient oil in the sump, then the sensor is faulty or has become disconnected. You can check for disconnection from under the car - but you'll have to take the undertray off.

The sensor looks like this:

Not difficult to replace should you have to, but all the oil will fall out :)

One more possibility is that the bonnet switch is faulty, which was pointed out by techie who is a SEAT master tech and therefore knows a lot more than I do about this. His recommendation was;

"Take off the connector behind the drivers side headlamp and bridge the terminals out. This will reset the light. Then get the switch looked at/replaced. "

The reason is that the oil level sensing system looks for evidence that you've opened the bonnet to check the level and resets the warning indication. If it still thinks the level is low, the warning will be triggered again after a few miles.

As above really differnt things for different lights. I dont believe there is an amber light, but red and yellow:

Red - lights up/flashes - oil pressure problem, which is often related to the oil pickup
Yellow - Lights up means oil level, flashing means the oil level indicator is defective.

I hope your amber is really a dull yellow, and not a red...

AH Muttley - beat me to it. Just :)

wow... great help there muttley, thanks for that. its the number 21 picture on diagram, solid yellow light on. il have a look at that sensor on the sump! as for the 'opening the bonnet and switch' whats that all about and where abouts is it?? i have also just noticed a slight oily mark on my driveway coming from under my car (no undertray on), is that oil sensor on the bottom of sump prone for leaking??

Nope, but they are quite weak... you will (as said here) will have to drain the oil... its also the cleanest and by far the easiest way to do it! IIRC its 3 x 5mm allen bolts holding the sensor on, as ur draining the oil, you may as well NOT put the dirty oil back in, but just put some clean oil back in until the next service. get the car up on ramps and have a look where the oil is coming from, it might just be the sump plug wasnt replaced on last service/not tight enough

The bonnet has a switch on it, and the ecu can tell if the bonnet has been opened or not. If it doesn't detect the bonnet opening, there's no way you could have added oil, so it leaves the light on.

The only probelm is, if the bonnet switch is broken, the ecu won't get the signal and the light will never go off.

It's a microswitch that is part of the bonnet lock mechanism. There is an electrical connection to the lock along with the Bowden cable, and the microswitch is visible if you take a close look.

This is what the bonnet lock looks like with the bumper off

The microswitch is the small square item next to the lowest mounting bolt.
