Shiny grabhandles

Syphon...be thankful

My 2002 cupra has done 30,000 miles and the nice soft rubber handles look more like a moulting dromedary:(

...or a chargrilled electrician

...or an orang utans nackersack

...or doctor crippens newly bathed girlfriend

I'd have em swapped under warranty but the new onew will do the same judging by the fact that they have stopped fitting them;)

I'll be honest here and say if the Octavia RS had been out when I bought my Leon, I would have bought one, primarily from a space point of view. I drove one not long after they were launched and the handling was better than the Leon (although in real world driving it really doesn't come into it that much). I suppose badge snobbery will always exist with some people (I guess that's why muppets spend 24 grand on an Audi S3).

Mike - what`d you pay for the Scooby ?

Ad in the Express yesterday had 4 or 5 door WRX`s £18995, MY02 only, obviously clearing the old Corollalikes out.

Strikes me as quite a bargain (for a UK, dealer car) if you can put up with the looks.......

Hey, is this a record? 979 viewings!

Obviously a subject which touches the heart. Do you all wish you'd bought a Skoda?

Interesting:wink2:

Cheers,

Er sorry Xizor, but no...:)

It has been a good discussion though. I've enjoyed it. Thanks.

Took a 51 reg Octavia RS out the other day and was very impressed with all aspects of the car. Agressive look, good handling etc. Seats as mentioned are potential grubby lookers but there's not much to retrim if necessary. Checked badges and rear one is on flat panel so can be removed easily and front grill bolts on so can be modded easy as well for the Skodaless stealth look.

Obviously personal choice but I recon they are OK and would be a good buy, especially second hand.

Had a lot of snobby remarks about the Cupra when it arrived, (6 VW Golf colleagues at work), most shut up after I took them out for a spin.

Mate at work has just taken delivery of the ‘Skoda Octavia Laurin & Klement Tdi’, an awful lot of car for the money. You can imagine the comments he’s getting from the badge snobs in the office.

As for myself owning a Skoda, possibly

1145 and climbing, lets keep this going....

I've just looked at the article in Oct '02 What Car mag which compared the '03 Cupra with the Octavia RS and the Focus ST170. Were did they get that Cupra from? It looked like an '02 model with the new bits bolted on. It had '02 seats and 2-tone dash plastic for a start. And they described the handling as poor and too soft! Eh? The ones I've driven where far from poor handling. Maybe the suspension was from a 1.4S!
Full of inaccuraces IMO which only put off Joe Public.
The Cupra was clearly the most stylish of the 3 but came last!

The Skoda won needless to say, the motoring press love'm for some reason.

..maybe cos it's actually a half-decent car? I don't think it's been a "fashionable" car to like, whereas the Civic Type-R, Focus RS, Mini Cooper S etc all have been loved then criticised with equal measure.

Consistantly it gets good reviews, although every article I read seems to say "if only they could match this engine to the 4wd drivetrain they'd be onto a winner" Always makes me smile :)

My mate had a Rs on test the other day so I took it for a spin. First thing that struck me was how BIG it is...I've also got a Ford Probe but this is huge. I like the look form the outside though..this one was in Red, you could have had a party in the boot of it.

The drive is good but on my limited test it just didn't have the compact cosiness of the Leon. The power was there but 5 speed gear box was c**p this car needs sixth gear.

The dash is Ugly reminded me of an old Toyota Cressida my Dad used to have in the early 80's. Sad I know but the thing I really liked was the aliminium style door locks knob/ things.

Anyway If I was carrying large loads & only driving mainly motorways I'd have a look at it. Much nicer than the Passat. It's a much different car to the Leon just the same engine.

P.s drove a Chrysler PT the other day...uuuugh! If there's one thing that puts me of a car is cheapo interiors. The aliminium inside door handles are plastick just painted silver...a bit like old toy guns. How cheap and nasty is that!

Looks like an 03 Model to me. I thought it was a fair assessment of the handling.

I agree the outside is a dead ringer for the '03 model but take a close look at the interior. Those are '02 seats and '02 plastics. Very odd.

BTW if I could afford a WRX the Seat and Skoda wouldn't be anywhere near my shortlist! Not even in the same ballpark.

Cheers,
Xizor.

I had an 02 Xizor and it's not an 02 Dash in the pics. I'd be more inclined to blame Seat and their somewhat flexible attitude to specs, than What Car. They'll have shot what was provided by Seat UK.

What Car haven't used Libarary shots. It's easy to see the 3 cars were all photographed at the same location, and from the light quality, at a similar time. It's classic, Direct Diffused ambient light, with no fill in flash. Quick and simple to do.

Hi All

I have a '51' plate Skoda RS and have read all the comments you guys have made about it.
When I was looking into which car to get, I went out and test drove the Cupra. IMHO the interior was very dull and un-inspiring. The quality didn't seem upto much either. I had to laugh at how the dash would flex abround the instrument cluster. The RS's interior is a little un-practicle because of the amount of white in there, but at least it is different. The Cupra itself went fantastic, but I do not like the 6 speed box. Why have gear ratio's like that when all the power and torgue of the engine are low to mid on the rev range. The 5 speed box of the Skoda RS is much more suited to the engine.
I found the handling of the Cupra OK, but not in the same league as the RS. That also goes for the brakes as well. The Cupra (before the face lift) also IMO blends in with all the other cars on the road. It's presence on the road isn't really fealt, the RS however looks more like a 180bhp car.
The Skoda badge for me was a problem when I was looking for a new car. I had to drag my wife kicking and screaming into the showroom to look at it. But after the test drive we were both converted. I know use the Skoda badge to my favour. Nothing better than blowing away a BMW in a Skoda.
Because of my Skoda RS, three of my works collegues have gone out and had Skoda RS's themselves. They were that impressed. Two of which went out and test drove the Cupra also.
Now, IMO the Skoda is the better car, but I am biassed. All the magazines I have read seem to agree. I would like to go and test drive the 'MY03' model of Cupra or even the Cupra R as I have heard the handling has been sharpened up.

PS Doesn't the latest road test (can't remember which magazine) of the Skoda RS, ST170 and Cupra, put the RS as having the highest residual value over the 3 years (I could be wrong).

Just my 2p's worth:) :)

I think we are losing sight of the major point here.. The Leon and RS have both good and bad points, but compared to VW and Audi models offer so much more performance for much less cash!!!

Personal preference's are like splitting hairs... i.e. not worth it...
both are bloody excellent cars....!!!!!

I think you are wrong - everything I've read points to far stronger residuals for Leon owners than Octavias, regardless of model.

All the mags I've read give a residual value after 3 years of about 50% for the Cupra. As for the Skoda they seem to disagree. Some say as low as 29% and others as high as 52%. Who can you trust?
Anyone got any 'real' figures?

Residuals

Xizor

All the mags are guessing. They have to be because their are no 3 year old RS Octavia's yet. We'll all have to wait & see what the depreciation turns out to be. Personally I reckon it will be nearer 50%.
