Hello, thinking of giving up my beloved Ibiza FR for an Exeo. At the grand age of 28, and doing lots of motorway driving I want some comfort now! My question is whats the mechanical differences between the 143 and 170? I would be remapping it immediately, can the 170 be remapped higher than the 143? If so why? Or is 170 plenty of power? Opinions appreciated cheers

I've got a 143 S2.0Tdi which I've remapped to 181bhp and 290lb/ft. It's a cracking car, but I have to warn you they are hard to get rid of. I tried to sell mine prior to the remap and there was absolutely no interest. Don't pay over the odds for one the dealers are struggling to shift them. I reckon you'll probably get a 30,000 mile 59 plate for £7,500 to £8,000.
Simlar comments to Irvtheswerv Mines at around 210hp and you also get larger brakes as per the petrol TSI version. ..................................... so DON'T pay over the odd's !! which ever version you go for

There are lots of mechanical differences between the 2 engines. It isn't just the Map that makes the difference between 140 and 170. The brakes are bigger on the 170 too and it will also come with speed sensitive steering. I know that a 140 can be mapped to about 175-180 but the brakes may not be up to coping with that power.
The 170 in the Exeo is not the same engine as the old PD170 in the MK2 Leon FR, it does not suffer all the DPF problems.
Go for a 170 if you can, they go better, they only use a sip mire fuel, they cost the same to tax and they cost only a few quid extra to insure. Also I guess the 170 will be slightly easier to get rid of as it's the most powerful diesel one.
BTW to best bit about the 170 is the all red TDI badge on the wings, none of this silver "T" and red "DI" going on with the proper derv engine

The brakes are fine on the 143 with 180bhp, ultimately 180bhp is nowt. The standard brakes on my Fabia VRS were fine with 179bhp, and in acceleration terms that knocked the spots off any diesel Exeo.

But as ever, if you can get a 170, why buy a 143 and remap it, unless like I did you can get one so cheap as to make it worthwhile.

The Fabia was putting out 334lb/ft, which is about 450nm. So more torque with I guess, 200kgs less and roughly the same bhp per kg. So yes it would knock the spots off your Exeo.

And that sounds a bit snotty, sorry that wasn't my intention. That's about as much as you'll get out of a Fabia without a hybrid turbo. And of course that's just in a straight line, the Fabia won't go round corners very well without quite a bit of money on suspension upgrades.
Got my 2013 Exeo estate remapped yesterday by Awesome.It was kicking out 148bhp before remap and then 180bhp after.Its now a completely different car to drive,smooth and of course a lot quicker...
I was told it will improve it so will keep an eye on it but I did have a mk1 fabia vrs which was remapped and I did get more mpg....

I'm under the impression a remap improves MPG during your normal driving as there is more power/torque at the lower end of the rev range due to improvements in the delivery of both so you don't need to work the engine as hard to achieve normal speeds.
However drive it with verve and I suspect MPG will drop as ultimately you're sticking more fuel in to get that extra power.

What did you do to your PD130 exeo to get 334 lbs/ft of torque out of it?
If anything like our Ibiza FR TDI 130, nothing other than remap it. Ours got a REVO generic map six years ago and puts out 318ftlb (according to Awesome GTI's rollers).
A box will not communicate and work with the car like a remap does. Revo is more expensive, ours was £500 at the time, but I found out later that the bloke that wrote the maps back then was the best of the best and many cheaper maps were based on that. How true that is these days I don't know, but I would only go somewhere with premises and recommendations, not to a bloke that comes to you in a crappy old car with a laptop.
Our Ibiza was done at ADS Limited in Preston. Our local SEAT dealer offers REvo remaps too (David Cook Motors in Chadderton). Awesome GTI offer their own maps and APR.
Thanks for the info everyone, I've been seriously warned off the tuning boxes, I'm told they work by interfering with sensors in the ECU to make it ask for more fuel. Yes it makes more power, but it's not efficient power and of course can lead to all sorts of EGR / DPF problems.
