New car, mpg?

Hi, i get my car tomorrow, was just wondering about mpg.
Its a 2.0l tfsi fr.
It has a 55 litre tank so at todays prices would cost £50 to fill.
So if the car averages 30mpg, that means in the 55litre tank there are 12 gallons.
So am i right in saying if there are 12 gallons in the tank and it does 30 miles per gallon, then for a full tank it would do 12x30 which is 360miles to a full tank. Is this correct. What sort of miles do you get to a full tank in this car?

What a stupid question!!
out of a tank you get the number of gallons * the average mile per gallon
Simple.

BUMP!!

Its not a stupid question it makes sense if you read it properly, which obviously you didn't.
This is what i was told
I gallon = 4.54 Litres so fill up car, drive it then fill up again and note how many litres filled it and how many miles you did. Divide number of litres by 4.54 to get gallons, divide mileage by gallons to get MPG.
So if i filled it with 55 litres and did 360 miles to that.
So according to the above i divide the number of litres by 4.54 which comes to roughly 12.
Then divide the number of miles (360) by the gallons and you get your MPG. so 360 divide 12 makes 30MPG. So in my first question i was asking if people do actually get 360miles out of the tank. which is doing 30mpg.

I doubt you'd get 360 miles out of a tank unless it was a long motorway run.

On a Cupra the MFD would say between 260 and 320 miles on a full tank, the Cupra being almost the same economy as an FR. The mileage on the MFD isn't known to be that accurate though.

I would often do a run to Birmingham then a run to Manchester the next day. After the 240 mile round trip i couldn't risk the 50 miles to Manchester so would have to fill up.

Also it would be more than £50 to fill if you used 98 RON petrol or above as recommended for that engine. I switched to normal unleaded just before selling the Cupra and noticed a drop in mpg.

I was just going on normal petrol prices.
Well thats a little dissapointing because it says it should do 35mpg combined.
If it only did 300miles say to a tank, thats only 25mpg, which is pretty poor considering it says it will do 35mpg combined

You can get 360 over a tank as long as you don't hammer it - see the stats via the mpg link. I don't get this very often, as the average displays.

Combined figures should always be taken with a pinch of salt I'm affraid. IIRC the combined mpg of the Cupra was 34.1, I saw 34 mpg once on a slow trip back from Birmingham doing 50 most of the way.

Overall average was probably about 27 mpg and I do do a lot of motorway driving. On a run it would get 30 mpg or sometimes 32 mpg on a regular basis once it was run in at 10,000 miles.

Superb engine on the FR and Cupra though... And just think if you had a Focus ST the mpg would be a lot worse...

It is a pretty arse-about-face question you were asking to be fair - you were using fuel economy to calculate how many litres there are in a gallon :wtf:

Anyway, economy even in combined figures won't tell you how many miles you'll get to a tank... not unless you're doing them all in one journey on a warm engine (with no choke)

Unless you're particularly anal about stuff like that, or have a point to prove down the pub, a better question would have been - How many miles are you guys getting to a tank, and what sort of driving are you doing?

This is one of those pretty subjective sort of question/answer topics. I can tell you that, yes, I have had 350 miles out of a tank (and could probably squeeze a little more) but that goes straight to hell as soon as the whistley bit on the engine starts working, or I start using the little fiddly bits either side of the steering wheel to change gear.

And it is very hard to resist doing that :D

If I'm whuppin' it - 25mpg by the time I get to where I am going (but a very huge grin)
If I drive like my Grandma, I can see 38mpg on the trip meter (which doesn't equate to the same in real figures.. think 35mpg tops). No huge grin, but I am fairly relaxed. However I refer you to the line above with the smiley ;)

Hope that answers your query, kinda.

Ooh - bottom line = if you cared about economy, you'd have bought a 1400 diesel :p

To be fair if you are worrying about how much MPG you are going to get from a petrol FR, and you are expecting anything near 30..... you probably should have gone for the diesel :p

Im not worried about it just wanted to know because i did have a seat leon 2.0tdi sport, and to a full tank i would get 500miles+. But costs more to fill, so was just wondering if i could get 300miles+ out of a full tank. Sould have really worded the question differently in the first place:)

Out of interest I did some calcs yesterday to compare my TT TDi to the Cupra I had before.

Based on 28 mpg for the cupra and 48 mpg for the TT TDi

The cost of 12,000 miles is:

Cupra on Super Unleaded - £1986.00
Cupra on Unleaded - £1849.20
TT TDi - £1237.20

Not sure what mpg your 2.0TDi Sport did, but if it was around 48 overall this should be a good comparison.

Average on the DIS is currently just under 48 although a lot of that has been motorway driving.

Even a short trip I can get 38 mpg, economy on the TT TDi is amazing, given the car is still fairly new (1300 miles) I can get 22 mpg more on the same run as the Cupra that was well run in.

Not as quick though (but with 70 bhp less would expect to be), power delivery is more all or nothing whereas the Cupra was a lot more linear. You get a kick from the turbo which you never experienced in the Cupra. Runs out of steam sooner too.

My Cupra has started eating fuel by the end, although I was doing more town driving and had dropped to 95 ron now and again, but the town driving at 17 mpg was probably killing the economy the most.

Will be interesting to see if the Leon gets the same TDi as the TT.

Interesting indeed as I can get 48 from mine.

Would love the TT TDi. Miss the grunt and mpg from my old Leon.

I get on average 44 mpg when i'm doing most of my driving round town in my 2.0 TDI Sport 140. I get up to 55 on a long motorway run at the speed limit (so not often ;)) and i've seen 60 when i was doing 50 mph coming down the m6 one day
