Surrey darling...
During a bit of a slightly high speed chase/play with a new GTI on monday I picked up a small stone chip on the left hand side of my windscreen - which has now become a fairly long crack heading in towards the centre after sitting in the sun all day Tuesday :(

Not too much of a problem as it will only cost £60 on the insurance but I'm worried...

My last car (Corrado) was notorious for having mucho problems with leaks after replacement screens had been fitted - not to mention the horror stories of bonnets being dented and a pillars getting scratched!

So, has anyone had this done on their Leon and how did it go?

My other question is to do with the fact that when the sun is just low enough to peep through the gap between the rear view mirror and roof it's a killer... can you get screens with a small amount of top tint like I have seen on Audi's?

and lastly, if so, what colour tints can you get? Idealy I'd like a grey, brown or if I had to, blue - I just don't want green lol

TIA

Phil

I remember my dad's Cavaliers used to have the tint strip, they don't seem to be too popular now. The one's I do see seem to be implemented into the actual glass as opposed to addons, for that it seems the stips that let no light though are the only way?

You can get those little visors but I had them on my Primera's and they were pretty crap, I know someone on here's fitter the Audi A3 one, have a searchy for the thread.

most tinters can put a sunstrip on the top of the screen. getting it done soon myself i hope

my leon had this done a week ago. the first screen was wrong as mines an older one with rain sensitive wipers. when they bought the right screen a little guy did it single handedly! i used auto glass and its fine.

he pointed out some stone chips on the roof edge before he started. job took 45mins. treated my car with the upmost respect:D

no leaks so far and dont expect any.
good luck

Had my screen replaced about 2 weeks after i got my 02 Leon last August, by Auto windscreens (Crawley) they did a bang up job, had no problems with water leaks so far almost 10 months later.

It was in very high tempreatures, so the screen bonded ok, better to get it done in the summer than when it's cold and wet, as the bonding process obviously takes longer in wet and cold conditions, and can run into problems.

From my experience if you go through your insurance to replace the screen (£50-60 excess) the company doing the job will only put the same type of screen in, or in other words if you have a tinted non top tint screen thats what you get as replacement, they won't give you an upgrade.

I tried to get a top tint when i had mine done and they wouldn't wear it.

I had my screen go in my LCR in feb went down a pot hole and it cracked bottom right hand corner.started goin from 1 side to the other in matter of moments.so foned RAC autowindscreens as soon as i got 2 work they say fit the new screen day after just gotta pay first £70 so no problem.had it fitted in about 30 mins by 2 guys, left the screen about 5 hours to set b 4 i drove home.now months later i still ain't happy screen whistles all the time at any speeds and never used to.they left black silicon all round the yellow paint work and didn't re stick the trim down rite.so i wasn't happy about the job done but i didn't come plain then,so dont think i can now.cheers

Get the job done by a respectable fitter and you should be ok.

I have to say I had a tint for the pesky sun on my old escort, and I think that is where it should stay as they are not used very often any more. Mind you mine did look naff. But I was soo proud of it when I was 18!

Was a small crack in my screen before I bought it (couldnt see it when i looked at it, but I should have spotted it as the rear view mirror was on the floor!). Part of the deal when I bought it was for them to give it a full 60k service (inc cam belt and water pump) and put it through its MOT. They were going to just inject it with resin, but, luckily for me, when refitting the rear view mirror, he put too much weight on it, and shattered the lot! Replacement screen for me. I wasnt collecting the car for another week anyway, so they left it in a garge will fitting it, (better than out in the cold and rain) and touch wood, absolutly no problems with the screen :D

I got a stone chip in mine, nothing major os soi thought, guy came out to sort it, when he took the pressure thing off, he somehow managed to put a 6 inch crack in my screen

Ended up getting a new one no problems since... apart from the tax disc holder coming unstuck a few times in the heat lol but fingers crossed thats sorted too now....

some may say lala land....
had a crack in mine since just after xmas.
not worried about replacing and it hasn't got bigger, not in drivers sight-line so no worries about MOT failure either. only notice it at times when sun glints from it.

Cracked the windscreen on my Leon Cupra a few years ago. Was replaced by insurance company for £50. Only took 30mins or so and no problems with leaks / noise etc.

Tip: Don't watch how they do it - it's quite nerve wracking.

i cracked my LCR windscreen about a month ago. Left it to long so they had to replace the whole screen...

Totally professional job, no problem at all and not expecting any!
