My car crashed itself

I was driving back from my girlfriend's this morning, and came up to a pretty tight corner, at about 30mph. As I turned into the corner, I felt a bump, like hitting a kerb, and my steering didn't seem to work my car went straight on into the kerb before coming to a stop.

On getting out of the car, I could see that my nearside front wheel was at nearly 90 degrees to my car, as shown below.

I initially thought that I had just skidded or hit something, but I thought that was weird at a slow speed and sure enough, when I looked back at the mark before I hit the kerb, there is some sort of scraping on the road, which I think may have been my wheel turning sideways, which leads me to think I had some kind of steering or suspension failure before hitting the kerb.

So now I have a bent wishbone, disconnected steering rack and all manner of broken things I don't really understand, not to mention an insurance quote. Anyone know what could have caused this? By the way, I understand that I do not always drive sensibly, but I really don't think this was just my own error. :(

Sorry for the quality of the pics, mobile phone camera.

Sorry about the accident too mate, gutting, could have been a loose steering rack which has come off, and caused it.
Someone will probably be able to explain. Hope its ok mate.

I'm not sure yet, because I got it towed through my insurance company it's not gone to a garage yet. It looks bad if you look behind the wheel and see the bent wishbone and drive shaft scraping the road.

It would have been a lot worse if there was a wall at the side of the road and not kerb and grass, let alone if I was going faster. No courtesy car though :(

There is some sort of joint down there where the steering rack should fit onto some sort of 'ball' on the wheel, and that has come apart, and the driveshaft isnt connected any more, that's all I can see but I've not taken a good look at those parts before and I know f-all about mechanics so I don't know if anything more is broken/missing.

No mods whatsoever save for the alloys, and they are on my insurance policy, so I guess that's a no.

yup - sounds like the rod end came off.

Not good at all, but at least you're OK - at least on insurance you'll get a lot of new parts...

serves as a reminder as to why you shouldn't do a ton... not that you're lucky you weren't!

What's the rod end? Is that part of the steering rack? Is it something that happens instantaneously or could it have been working towards coming off, because for a while while on heavy lock my steering has felt weird, like instead of turning it has tried to go forwards instead, that sounds so bizarre or obvious written down but makes sense to me.

On the plus side, the recovery guy says they might be able to sort out the little dent/scratch I put int he car a while back at the same time as fixing the bit of my wing that the wheel has kicked out

On the down side, no car for at least a week :(

sorry to hear about this mate.but im glad your ok.

not sure if this relates

the guy i bought my car from had put the car through an mot and it failed on a split cv boot. he got this repaired but i dont know by whom.

when jabba fitted my suspension upgrade...on the side where the new cv boot had been fitted the hub fell off as elton replaced the springs , covered the poor sod in grease :D . he said the cv boot hadnt been fitted properly. apperently leons are different in this compared to other makes and maybe beezas are the same?

he said that not much was holding the wheel on and hard steering could have pulled the driveshaft out. very very dangerous.[:@]

im no expert and this happened ages ago so dont take the explanation word for word but someone out there may understand it better

hope you get it sorted

weird one.
driveshaft/CV broke out... maybe the track rod end fell off or snapped, but it alos looks like the wheels angle (massive +ve camber) shows the strut to bearing carrier (hub) being loose..

Well weird.

Bear in mind the car hit the kerb after I lost control over the steering, and I have no idea what position the wheel was in as it hit.

Aup mate,
Mine did that about 2 months ago and in the end it damaged the track rod end around £40, the steering rack screw thread within the rack itself had been damaged due to the extreme impact (Again only travelling at around 40mph, that was the dear bit at around £300/400 for a recon one from a seat aftermarket dealer, the bottom swinging arm had been bent £44+ the dreaded VAT. In the end i was left with all the above damage, a ripped tyre wall (must be replaced, DO NOT drive with a ripped sidewall even if it holds it pressure!! Blow outs can be severly nasty, and thats if you walk away to tell the tale!! But back to topic, cost me around £550-600 but the good lads at my local seat dealer did it all VAT free considering the circumstances and also did me the labour at half time!! So it cost me around £400 all in!! but it will all work out!! if its as bad as mine then thats the cost roughly but you may not have damaged the rack if you were going slower than me!!At least you or your Mrs were not hurt in the accident, if you need any advice or numbers for cheaper parts bell me on the following: 07845693725
Cheers Matt M (cupra owner) :)

Bargain, that's really good of you mate cheers! Mine's all being fixed through insurance though, it's going to cost £400 for the excess anyway! But as we told the insurance company that there was a fault before it hit the kerb, an inspector is going to assess the damage, and we might be able to claim some of it through the warranty, which I think CIS would be keen to do to avoid paying out.

Do you know what actually caused yours to do it? There have been a few theories here just wondered if you could clear it up?

Also, general question, I have Cupra alloys on my Ibiza, which have been declared, and I sent CIS pics of them at their request. The one that got slightly kerbed is going to be refurbed, but the front one looks beyond repair, there's a proper chunk missing out of the rim, so will I get a new Cupra alloy, and if so where from? Will they get it from Seat or something?
