Hi everyone,
Previously I have shared my unofficial navigation activation story on a SFD2-protected MIB3 infotainment unit.
My 2025 Cupra Ateca came with "7UH - Preparation for navigation system" so it was showing some navi db version on system information screen, even though it wasn't activated. The version was 23.6 and in line with then-current version shown on Cupra's official navi update webpage.
Later, some day I turned on the wifi hotspot on my phone and connected the infotainment unit to that hotspot so it became connected to internet. I wasn't thinking about an update or anything like that. An hour later I happened to check the system information screen and it was showing version 23.12! This meant the software is set up to check the new versions when it gets connected to internet. By the way, I don't have any online service subscription like Cupra Connect or anything like that. At the time, we weren't even able to activate the navigation yet. We had enabled required FeCs but some codings were still missing. Also Cupra's official webpage was still showing 23.6, I mean the update wasn't even public yet.
So I guess the software in our unit has the capability to run an update over the air, at least the maps, if not the system firmware, even if there's no subscription.
And now the latest development, Cupra has published the version 24.6 recently. I connected the unit to hotspot again and waited for a while to repeat the procedure above but it didn't happen this time, maybe I didn't wait enough, I don't know. The really stupid background update procedure with no clues, designed by dear VAG developers, does not give us an opportunity to have some idea about what's going on.
Anyway, I downloaded the latest published version, unzipped it onto an external drive that has an activity LED to show me if there's a reading going on, connected it to a USB port on the front center console and started waiting. The LED kept blinking for a couple of minutes and then stopped. I waited for an additional hour that passed with a couple of occasional blinks, then got bored, turned the ignition off & on, opened the system information screen, and voila! The latest update was there, as shown by the photo below.
An interesting note: The usual size of the Turkish map update files is around 1.7 Gb and 23.12 update was in line with that. This time, the downloaded file of 24.6 update was 20Gb but the update process seemed to take only five minutes. It probably copied only changed files, hence the quick update. But then again, why include all the map files for an update? Maybe they offer full package with the first update of the year, and only the changed files with the second. That's the only explanation I could think of.
For the curious ones who is able to bear with my long post up to this point: The updated map still shows old names of streets, businesses that don't exist anymore etc. The quality of map data still seems very low. (Is VAG's current provider Here Maps?)
Cheers,
Serdar
