What's the point of a mandatory speed limiter you can just switch off?

Not everyone needs to use them for them to work. Roads are busy, all it takes is a decent percentage of road users to stick to the limit and everyone has to, especially in town. Its also a handy feature for those who cant resist, or need to resist because thye are near their points limits.

I use cruise control that way, its less tempting if you aren't doing the speed control.

They'll start out that way then a few years later you won't be able to turn them off. Then there will be mandatory black boxes fitted, all in the name of driver safety so the sheep buy into it. Then insurance companies will check your black box when you make a claim and so will the police. By this time it will be too late to go back and all those that thought it was a good thing will have no choice but be monitored everywhere they go. Mean while the Real Criminals will disable it all and carry on as usual with their illegal activities undisturbed as road traffic police will be virtually non existent by then. Joe Public law abiding citizen will be under full control as it will be checked for the MOT.

Just had a black box fitted thanks to my son! It's awful, totally awful. I've spent more time balacing the needle on the speedo than watching the road. Almost got the rear end of the car taken off cause I didn't want to floor it and almost t-boned a car because I didn't want to brake hard. But don't worry, I'm 75% less likely to have an accident now it's fitted. I'll post my score when it's published tomorrow! Apologises to all the drivers that had to follow me through the 20mph zone at about 17mph in 2nd gear.

So this is what the black box thinks of my driving. The only one that requires any skill whatsoever is smoothness. Usage - I get the car home before 10pm for a perfect 10. Speed - I make you all follow me at 24mph everywhere. Smoothness - I opted to nearly cause two accidents to keep my score up. Unfortunately at a green light, someone decided to slam the brakes on to let a car turn right across us. Hence I lost 1.2 points on smoothness.

I dread to think what my results would be if I had one on the Cupra, yet with no points and 17 years NCD, I am a fast but safe driver (and biker) but this box would have me down as uninsurable.

Haha. Well I was back in the Cupra today and chuckled at the fact I floored it at one point and the g-force unlocked my phone and gesture controlled the torch on! That'd gotta be a 3.4 for smoothness right there!

But seriously, whilst maintaining a speed of 29-32, I can keep most of my attention on the road. Knowing I get punished the second I go over 30 (and for every second I stay over it) I'm more involved with the cluster than what's going on in front of me.

Oh and then the great one of me being stuck on the inside lane whilst some d!ckhead doing 34 in a 40 tootles past me. Car in front is doing 30 in a 40 and I'm slowly being boxed in and there's nothing I can do about it without losing points.
