Possible linkage problem BUT, be aware that the selector shaft is a weak point on these boxes, the rivets work loose and eventually sheer, sometimes taking the shaft with it causing similar problems to what you are experiencing.

I'm not saying it is that but would be the worst case scenario.

i called out the rac and was told by the technician that it was the selector.
if it is the selector how do i change it, and does the gearbox have to come out to do it. what would be my next step in fixing this problem?. whats involved with changing the selector? any advice you could give me would be fantastic. so please please help. thanks

The selector is the fork inside the GB that is moved by the gear box linkages to select the gears.

http://videos.howstuffworks.com/howstuffworks/126-how-manual-transmissions-work-video.htm

Take a look at this, this is similar to what we have but we have wire linkages to the top of our box where the Honda has solid bars for linkages.

Hope this helps

If you've not already has a good look at the site above it will clear up most of the questions you have about your car, from turbo to engine and gear box

Did you get a chance to read the above post?
The selector fork is inside the GB and the GB needs to be removed to allow this to happen.
The magnitude of the job depends on your skills, tools and previous experience.
If you have done lots of the it should be easy for you.
If you've never done this before you might manage
