Hi,

I'll cut to the chase. I'm thinking of selling the Cupra and swapping it for a Lupo GTi. The reasoning is that my girlfriend and I could do with the funds for some stuff for our new flat (kitchen etc). The younger ones amongst you aren't allowed to laugh :p !

I reckon we could get around 11k for the Ibiza (56 plate, basically brand new, 8k miles) and a decent 6-speed Lupo for around 7-8k freeing up three grand that we'd only lose in depreciation before too long anyway.

We don't need a car, but I love them too much. Plus I don't want to pootle around in an anonymous rep mobile, even if it is financially more sensible!

Is this a financially insane idea? Is it an insane idea full stop? Would a Lupo GTi be a decent-ish swap (I used to have an Arosa Sport)? Do you have any other suggestions, lottery win notwithstanding?

Cheers,
Chris

P.S. I wouldn't consider "downgrading" to an FR or whatever. I'm just not a huge fan of "warm" versions of most cars.

I've just got a flat with the GF, so I know how you feel mate, we are currently refurbing it! But we are taking it one step at a time, could you just save up monthly (like put a bit money away each month and get it later on)? Or do you have to have a kitchen straight away? I had to convince the gf that we don't need a kitchen straight away and we could save up monthly and get it later on.
But if not, a lupo would be a nice little motor! :)
Or get in debt and get a loan??

Without boring you all with the details of our flat / DIY plans, we need to do the kitchen and living room at the same time and need around 10k to do it how we'd like. We could save up and wait, but it means having to live in a less-than-ideal (but still livable) kitchen / living room arrangement.

As for loans / debt, we're both very wary of getting into unsecured debt unless we know we can clear it almost instantly.

I think credit cards should be rebranded as debt cards, then people would be less keen to use them. A complete off-topic, I do find it slightly worrying about how much debt the populace and the country is in. The ex-iron chancellor is setting us all up for hard times imho.

sounds like a sensible idea, but have you driven a lupo gti?
Cracking little car and looks sweet. However I think you might a bit dissapointed with the performance though coming from a turboed motor to N/A.
Whatever though the Lupo is still a cracking car, so long as it's been run on super unleadded as the exhaust valves tend to get burnt out on anything less than 98 RON.
This happened to my Mrs Lupo sport, but we managed to trade it in before it got bad

there was an article in golf+ oct '07 issue that says about it too

As mentioned, I had an Arosa Sport and really like the engine. The 1.6 in the Loop is pretty similar aside from the bore I think. I know I'll be taking a pretty big performance hit, but I can't help but think I prefer petrol to derv anyway  Plus, other than on the motorway I seem to get very little opportunity to plant it in the TDI; the Arosa I hooned around everywhere and was probably a bit more enjoyable for that reason.

I've also read that the 0-60 (the most quotable) performance measure of the Lupo isn't all it seems; 60 comes up in two gear changes rather than one. Any ideas what they pull 1/4 mi in?

Bit of both. Plasterer and plumber is obviously skilled, but assembling the units etc. is a job for us (and dads; bed, breakfast and beer provided).

Well as long as the sink, washing machines/dishwashers etc are all relatively in the same place I would say that you give the plumbing a try yourself. Plumbing is made really easy these days with fittings that can be just pushed on.

Poverty: we need to move our water heater to maximise the space available. Don't ask... :)

rash: it's not a bad idea, but Golfs do nothing for me at all. The GTi even in 1.8T form leaves me cold. R32 however ;)

Anyone got much experience of Lupos? I know some people from Club Lupo lurk on here sometimes...

A guy down the road from me had a arosa not sure what spec it was but I raced him and we were pretty much even. He has now upgraded to a lupo GTI and needless to say I dont want to race him anymore. :p

He seems very pleased with it and it does look smart. Suppose you should hunt one down for a test drive and make an oponion on it.

There's one for sale just down the road. He's asking £7,300 for it. I reckon it's worth £6,800 (49,000 miles on an 03)...?

What do people reckon I could get part-ex for the Ibiza? 2006 56 plate, 8,000 mi in black with iPod connector. Just been serviced, two years warranty left.

I wouldn't take less than 10 to 9.5K for it, but you watch em try and offer you less

10k? You're having a laugh :) !

I was thinking 11k absolute minimum; both valuations I've looked at (Parker's and What Car?) agree.

Lupo GTI is nice, especially in Blue with Xenons :D

My mate had one but they suffer with gearbox problems, best to sell it private mate.
