Don't think mine sounds like that but I'll try tomorrow morning.

Car is about 7 months out of SEAT warranty so doubt they would sort free of charge if it was the chain.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

Any mileage where this issue appears from? Or age of vehicle? On 78k km and after 2 years and 8 months.

Hi ,
Two months ago, I bought a Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSI 140 HP and since then, every morning (since day 1) when I start the engine first time or when the engine is cold (after 4-5 hours), I hear a strange(whining) noise (less than 1 sec.). I searched the forums in my country for people who have the same problem and I found only three guys only, having no solution for that. So, I thought to try the forums from other countries, maybe I find problem solving. I know for sure it's not the starter, but I don't know from where this sound come from. I found some videos with that noise, but I can not post it here, forum policy. Please, can somebody help me with some ideas?
Thank you very much.
@Lucifer. A true presentation of the 1.4 TSI. Congratulations for your work!
PS. Somebody told me that could be the high pressure fuel pump the source of the noise. The dealer representative told me the cause is the clutch undersized. I don't believe it.

Let me just address some of the questions posted

The noise the timing chain makes when its on its way out is a squeaking rattle sort of noise. Sounds a bit different to the 1.2tsi video above.

Regarding boost cuts using revo and apr........once soft misfire is detected then the ecu reduces boost until its gone. So you could have one really strong pull and lift off and then mash the throttle again and the car will start off strong and seem to fade away because its pulling boost.

First up GREAT GUIDE. I've been looking up mods for this engine and was getting annoyed at the lack of info then came across this.

I noticed that this guide pertains to CTHE/CAVE engine variants of the 1.4 TSI. What about CAVD? I have a 2012 CAVD engine and there are loads of CTHD ones here now but engine failures have been scarce after 2010/2011 basically.

The last letter dictates the software they have. F is 145ps, E is 180ps and D I believe is 185ps

So there is zero mechanical difference between CAVD and CAVE? Poster on an Australian forum said its just software alone but I find it hard to believe because stage 1 CAVD with similar power to CAVE do not have the same widespread oil consumption issues CAVE engines tend to have.

Its the same engine but you have to remember the CAVD came out on the A1 about 2 years after the original CAVE. So it has the 2 years of updated parts as standard. If you bought the last CAVE before it changed to the CTHE code then it should be the same as the CAVD. The CTHE has different piston rings and a few other bits. Don't know when these were added to the CAVD engine because its code never changed, who knows they may have been there from the start but cant find any info on them

3. Turbo

Solution:
Custom oil restrictor (if running decat)
Strengthened oil seals (as part of the turbo hybridization process)

NOTE: LOBA270 has normal oil seals, and is not suited to a de-cat exhaust, despite what they say!

Hey Lucifer, the custom Oil restricter bolt, where did you get this from, and how did you restrict it, ive managed to get hold of a new bolt (from a local engineers) and it has four holes as aspose to the 3 that the 1.4tsi's have, and i was going to put a small weld on two of the holes!! Would this do the job, if not, what would you recomend, or what did you do??

Thanks in advance. :)

TO MODS: Please make this a sticky thread. It answers most of the main issues with the 1.4 tsi engines. It'd be really helpful to new members with these issues!

Great post..
Probably the best I've ever read about any car online... Although that's not alot but still!
I have a 2010 ibiza fr 150.
It's revo stage 2 at the mo, full cobra exhaust with cat. Airtech intercooler, forge induction kit & upgraded engine bolts. It's best run on the dyno was 221 bhp.
What else can I do to it?
I am going to get some of the things mentioned in here checked on mine too just to be safe lol.
Thanks again for the post.

Also... When I start her up after sort of 4+ hours, it starts fine but idles slightly high for a minute then goes down to normal, doesn't sound rough I don't think. I'd always assumed it was a automatic choke? Or is it the oil leak problem?
Thanks :)

If your car is cold the startup is different. Revs may be higher during warm up phase.

Hi all. Brilliant write up. Thanks, Lucifer. I took ownership of my 2014 Ibiza Cupra last month. Even in the 2014 car, I certainly have the slight misfire at idle on a rare occasion in the right environment. Can I take it that this is nothing to worry about?

Also, do you recommend the PCV system upgrades on the newer engines too?

ie..
Custom catch can setup to catch any oil from the PCV system. (please see other guide)
Drilling out the internal engine check valve (If not CTHE and stage 3)

The magnetic clutch (item 6) on our Ibiza FR has the exact problem you describe. Other than from Seat, any suggestions as to where to buy the relevant parts at a sensible price. Magnetic clutches, (ie for air con systems) seem to be not that expensive.
