Cheeers! Only from a dire, annoying, expensive, hair pulling trial and error experience could I have come up with that! I now own a VAG com for future "problems" after my crank sensor died.

I can back that up. 1.5 hrs labour plus £45 for the new sensor. I only say expensive before as I wasted time and money on "repairing" the wrong darn things! And 2 rental cars at the time!!!
Its only made more awkward as the sensor is in a stupid place next to the oil filter which involves removing an engine mount etc. Otherwise its a simple plug in job!
The reason mine died was due to the oil pressure switch leaking oil all over the connector.

Telford ay it...
A basic service is real easy. Oil, Oil filter, air filter (or clean if re-usable), check plugs, leads etc. and a scan with Vagcom if you have it.

Just get stuck in ;) Theres plenty of us to give you pointers or actually give you a hand.

Mine was about £48 from car spares and there a right swine to fit had to get the front engine mount off and a load of other bits and bobs just to get at it. And as i read somewhere before i also had spent £300 buying new dizzy, fuel filter, leads, plugs, coil etc etc :D

Hope u get it sort soon bud ;)

overfueling and incomplete combustion of fuel

So if your CPS had been playing up and you'd been misfiring all over the place that'd cause the carbon deposits
