Locked keys in the car :(.

Hello All, I have had my Cupra Ateca for just over 2 years now and it has just started a strange behaviour.

I parked up the other night and rather stupidly left the keys on the passenger seat to pop into a shop, when I came back the doors had automatically locked themselves and I was locked out. After a call to my wife my spare keys were delivered and I got back into the car.

This morning the same behaviour has been observed when I got out, but this time with my wife still in the car (and the keys now in my hands) all the doors lock, but the mirrors do not fold in.

I am certain that I have not pressed any of the keyfob buttons.

So, has anybody else seen this happen ?.

Feels like you might want to change the battery in it. There is an aeriel that picks up the keys when they are in the car. Alternatively some people are fascinated with auto locking the cars with keys out. Nobody coded this in ?. I don't trust one touch apps.

I never totally trust Kessy although it's never played up on me. In the early VWs people were locking their keys in the boot. The aerial not detecting the keys were still in the car when they locked the keys with the sports bag in the boot etc.

Feels like a coding, battery, failure of electronics thing in that order, combination of the first two.

I got locked out of the berlingo and nemo multiple times. Once even with the keys in the ignition. Not sure how that works

Not detecting the keys in the van.... why I think it's stupid of people to code automatic locking when keys are removed. It's asking for trouble.

Not on a 2 year old Ateca I don't think.

Suspect someone at some stage got carried away with coding which assumed the Kessy aeriel inside always worked... Or some other coding glitch that got into it. OP is a little quite.

To address a number of points...

I changed the battery in the fob about 6-8 weeks ago with a freshly purchased cell.

The car is too old to be able to use the Cupra Connect App.

It has happened once more since I posted my question .

I'm going to replace the fob battery again just in case.

~9 months seem to be what you get out of Kessy with Duracell. Just changed the partners batteries on both keys based on the warning given. Both changed together previously. Keys not left inside the car. Kessy is heavy on batteries.

Can I also suggest squeezing (literally) a 2032 cell in, in place of the recommended 2025. I once saw a very interesting technical video examining why the 2025 is underspecified for what SEAT are asking it to do. Of course I didn't bookmark it and now can't find it. . IIRC it's to do with the current rating of the cell, and how it drops off under load.

More capacity in a CR2032 than a CR2025. It's held in by the case rather than inside by a clip. It works. An old Skoda trick.

The Arona uses the CR2032, original Ateca CR2025. I'm not too sure whether the newer Ateca switched to the newer remotes or use the same based on the CR2025 which was in the launch Ateca..

Either way you use a thick screwdriver to get the case to unclip and a bradle to put into the gap which causes the battery to pop out. I normally put a meter onto the battery to cross check with what's on that thread. Volts isn't everything thou so not the bee all and end all. A CR2032 slides into place in the newer remotes, wedged by the case door in the older remotes. The 9 month battery life comes from the newer remote control on the Arona. I'm getting longer on the Ateca with the older remote and the CR2032.
