I'll be after an intercooler fairly soon and i've heard that i can use a laguna item with samco hoses. Anyone done this or have any info/pics or part numbers?

Also been looking at this universal fit cooler, any good?

In the same position here mate, it's £132 for a brand new Laguna intercooler from Renault. But it's huge ... good for cooling ~ not so good for fitting.

I think I will be making my own version of Forge intercooler, You can get an intercooler from them the same size and it's not a bad price. Just get a few samco's 'n pipe etc and save yourself a few bucks.

Keep us up to date either way.

Ahh right, would be a bit of a pain to fit then. What about a universal cooler from ebay, theres quite a few on there?

I picked up a sunny gti-r intercooler from ebay for £20. I know they originally top mounted on sunny but there's no reason why you cant use them front mounts. They have proved to be succesful on rover turbo's

I know they arent pretty, but if i manage to get it fitted for under £150 including the cooler and it does a reasonable job i can put up with the uglyness of the thing :D Dont hold your breath though as its been sitting around for a couple of months. Though over xmas i think i will pull the bumper of the car and see if it will fit without too much messing about.

Sounds like fun. So i'm guessing i could just buy any old cooler and wedge it in there. Any recomendations on what size the inlet and outlet bores should be?

That's the thing i didnt measure the one i bought, or know how much space there is really. I know it sounds daft but for £20 i thought i might aswell give it a go :)

Hose's would have to be a mix and macth affair i think. Dont quote me but i think the standard hoses inlet and outlet are 60mm - 70mm.

I dont know much about the universal one's that are on ebay, build quality could be complete rubbish. Its a risk i guess. Though im sure there are hundred's of happy people out there with them.

I have seen a few GTI-R's FMIC on there and they are huge!!! I didn't they would ever fit, but if the standard tmic will fit then for £20  ... I'll give it a go.

But I would like my car to remain as standard to look at as possible I want to be able to put my mesh back on if at all possible. :)

Yep i prefer stock looks aswell . If it looks like it will be too much effort i'll just sell on a rover forum for some profit :D

Saab 900 turbo intercoolers can be found very cheap.. Also the larger Saab 9000 i/c would fit i reckon...

Them pics with the standard top mounted intercooler for the gti-r looks absolutly tiny when its turned into a fmic.

i refuse to pay 600 quid for a FMIC from forge, so i am also looking for an alternative, more towards the summer i'll probably look into fitting a sprinter intercooler, got machines at work that could bend IC piping no problem.

Anybody got ideas on the depth required so the mesh still fits in?

I looked onto getting a laguna fmic a while back. There was a post about it but I can't find it...it may have been deleted for one reason or another.

You can pick the actual intercoolers up for next ot nothing....iirc I found some for about £50 delivered (I think a DCi one is best), from 0 mileage cars. I didn't go ahead with it though because fabricating the pipework would be a mission.

he said cos he has the ko3s fitted and a few other bits the laguna one wasnt as effective as a forge 1 but when he had the same mods as me he said it was spot on + the forge 1 looks a bit better lol

It isnt that small its the shape that makes it look smaller than it is.

Just measured the core of the one i have here

350mm width , 295mm height, 60mm thick. Dont know how that compares to the forge or AM one.

Another good one to look out for would be off a transit, latest shape one. Or a rover 75 turbo diesel.

One thing though is the intercoolers from cars nowadays have plastic endcap's i know the vag ones are strong enough just not any others.

Im sure the forge etc are great, just like flashbsd said its alot of money really i think.
