Hi, I am test driving a 2019 1.5 tsi 150 xcellence lux tomorrow and I am incredibly impressed with the spec in terms of features. However im also looking for good performance as well as technology so I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this engine and how it performs to others. For me it’s between this and the 1.8 tsi fr tech (which I have also test driven) and I have heard good things about that engine. However I have heard not so good things about the 1.5 especially in manual, for example kangarooing in low gears, the turbo taking a long time to kick in and for acceleration to be a bit unresponsive. I would really appreciate any good or bad experiences people have with their car. Thanks

It's the 1.5tsi 130 manual that had the reputation for kangarooing. The 1.5tsi 150 runs a different combustion cycle (Otto not Millar) has a different turbo charger and compression ratio. I've got the 1.5tsi 150 DSG Evo (cylinder deactivation) and it has run really well from new. No lag and performs really well.

I can vouch for the 2017 1.8tsi manual. Mine has been remapped for the last 4 years at 253hp 375nm and runs like a champ. Oil and filter change every year and it has been faultless. Really quiet and smooth engine. On a motorway run can get up to 45mpg at 65-70mph.

Tuning/ remapping would definitely be something I would want to do if I were to get either car so that’s great to hear you can get that much out of the 1.8. Do you know if the 1.5 tsi 150hp is as easy to remap without any problems and what do you reckon I could get out of it?

I enjoyed the way it drove today and the features are fantastic for the price, I’m still torn between this and the 1.8 mainly as the 1.8 offers a performance difference especially with a remap. So I’m just looking at my options in terms of remapping the 1.5. It’s an annoying situation because in an ideal world I could get a version that has the performance and tuning capabilities of the 1.8 but the spec and features of the 1.5 xcellence lux.
