Not sure if the cars hard life is starting to catch up with it

On the way home I noticed a knocking sound coming from the front left wheel when turning. Got home and had a closer look and found this.

From what I can see is the spring is making the noise because it turns as you turn the steering wheel... which im sure its not supposed to do.

The rubber seal (protector??) had been pretty much mauled by something, its split in two with lots of holes in it.

What do you all think?

i doubt that the shock cover is your knocking problem but will obviously need to be changed as the shock will be getting dirt and grit in the joins!

is it when you turn both ways or 1?

Both ways...

When you turn the steering wheel the spring twists with the wheel, and then springs round which makes the noise I can here in the car.

Not sure how the top mount could cause the damage to the shock cover though.

Looking at it again, it seems as though the rubber boot has been caught up inside the shock

Would this be possible???

the cover would have been damaged by the shock crushing it could just have been caused by the cover unclipping and getting all caught up specially on your track days

the topmount could be yourknocking problem but the pics of the rubber cover look alot worse in the second bunch of pics so tis could be jamming up the spring and causing it to turn with the sterring

the bottom of your shock where the spring sits has got 2 stopping points for the spring.

check, IF you can, that the spring isn't out of those 2 points - that would instantly tell u for a fact whether your spring is turning.

Went along this morning and they had a little look.

I was told that the shock covers disintegrate over time and is common on the Mk4 Ibiza, and they would not replace it, although I am still concerned that it seems to be trapped inside the shock. I'll have another look tonight...

But they have told me there is a split in the ARB and all the brushes are knackered all of which will be changed for free.

Does this sound about right? Or should I ask for the shocks to be changed and/or top mounts to be looked at?

Edit: I also expressed my concern about the shock having no rubber boot on as it would be exposed to the elements, and I felt it would lead to it prematurly needing to be replaced in the future. They said this would not be a problem. So why fit it
