Just about to buy a Seat Leon FR TSi 1.8 .. 2 questions ...

Well i am just about to buy a Seat Leon 1.8 TSi.
Only done 7k miles on a 14 plate.
Paid a deposit, but i ahve a couple of worries.
My local garage ( Where i have my repairs done ) has said The TSi engines use quite a bit of oil.
He said their was an article on TV about it.
Does anyone know if this affects the 1.8 TSI engine ?
Also are the timing chains known for slipping etc ?
Only asking as i had a Scirocco 1.4 twin charger and i do not want to make the same mistake again.

Brand new ones tend to burn around about a litre of oil over the first 10k miles but other than that they are spot on but older ones have a problem with the coolant bypass valve. The housing seal fails and causes coolant to leak into the rest of the housing resulting in the valve failing both mechanically and electronically. Can be around £1000 repair.

The 1.4 twin charger motor as also used in the Ibiza Cupra was not a good engine.
They had chain issues and tended to use oil.

Yes - some of the larger capacity TSi motors can use oil but it is not the horror story that the twin charger motor was.

What year car do you mean with the above statement ?
I am paying £12.5k for this 14 plate, 1 owner, mint, lots of extras only 7k miles done.
So i really do not want to make a bad mistake.

Hi bud. As far as I can recall it's the older version of this engine not this one. Im sure it was the one which alot of the Audi 2.0 tfsi and 1.8tfsi pre 2012 had the issues regarding excessive oil consumption. I had a 64 plate 1.8tsi Leon was mint and didn't use a drop of oil I then changed car(big mistake) and have come full circle and am now buying another 1.8tsi dsg based of my previous enjoyment. As someone else stated when new they can use an amount of oil but since a top up have been fine( earlier posts on different threads from a few years ago on here ) if that makes and sense.

Just wondering about the coolant issue stated above now.
Supposed to be doing the deal tomorrow ( Deposit paid already ) and picking it up this Sunday.

You'll be fine, don't believe everything you read on forums. Remember Seat are making thousands of cars so a small % will have issues but thats the same with all brands.

If in doubt, go for a Seat extended warranty for peace of mind.

I'm not sure bud regarding the coolant issue. Not heard of that regarding this generation of the 1.8 not saying it hasn't happened. I've just not heard of it personally. On to less worrying things. What spec colour etc is the car youve put a deposit on? I'm due to pick mine up tomorrow. Haven't seen it in the metal yet just a video.

@jacko5, I’ve got the 1.8 EA888 VAG engine in my VW Polo GTI. Same engine as the 1.8 unit used in the mk3 Seat Leon, but with a slightly higher power output in the VW.

I’ve owned the car for two years from new, and in the first year I added around 200-250 ml of oil. In the second year, I didn’t have to add any. So if mine is representative of this engine, oil consumption isn’t an issue.

The Leon you’re getting sounds nice and with a good spec. I really like Alor Blue.
