Gents,

Been looking at getting myself a new project car to keep me busy over the next 18 months - 2 years. Still in the VAG range but want to get something 4WD and build it to 600+ HP.

I've been looking at MK5 R32's in Deep Blue Pearl, I want something with the Recaro leather interior and Xenon headlights and a few other of the factory options. I've had a look at some very nice examples on R32OC and they are not a lot of money for what you get.

A link to something similar to what I want

http://www.r32oc.com/index.php?/topic/43737-MK5.-2007-'57'-VW-GOLF-R32-DSG.-54,000m-EVERY-FACTORY-OPTION../page__view__findpost__p__456829

I've done a bit of homework into the modifications required to get a car like that upto 600-700HP range.

Shortlisted 'mods' list.

HTA GT3582R Turbocharger
Custom Tubular Exhaust Manifold (44mm External Wastegate)
Custom Downpipe
JE Pistons 85mm 8:5:1 Compression
Connecting Rods
Calico Main & Big End Bearings
ARP Main Studs
ARP Head Studs
Full Valvetrain
Port & Polish Head
Custom Intake
Custom Charge Pipe
Custom Intercooler & Pipework
1000cc Injectors
Uprated Fuel Pump
Boost Controller
Custom ECU Remap
Gearbox Remap

These are the basics, one thing i'm not to sure on yet is the internals of the gearbox, expecially the DSG gearboxes. Will need to investigate this further.

I won't be getting rid of the Leon and there are a few things that I want to do to the Leon over the winter so in the meantime going to keep an eye out for a decent R32.

Ever considered converting the Leon to 4wd and going GT35?

How do you find the front wheel drive with the GT30. I assume your well into 3rd to get decent traction but is it then pretty stable through 4th and intro 5th?

It's a possibility I suppose, would be cheaper but I just love the sound of the V6 especially with a massive turbo!!

Would cost about 6k to 4WD the Leon, and then probably another 2-3 for gt35. But still wouldn't give me a V6 turbo.

Might have a look into it tomorrow mind. Would probably need to change my manifold to something like the full race one as my wastegate pipe is too small for even my baby GT30! Lol :) this would mean a new DP too as it won't clear the transfer box

6K for the conversion?
As you know i bought my S3 and made more breaking it than i paid so technically the bits were free
I reckon 1k to rebuild rear end with new bits, new suspension for good setup 1k, maybe 1k for bits n pieces and gearbox or transfer box overhaul
Its more time than money
If you do get an R32 realistically youd need to shift/break the leon as you wouldnt need 2 weekend cars

Don't want to get rid of the Leon, only had it back for 6 months. It's currently laid up in one of the garages for the winter so on the prowl for a decent r32 ATM.

Was quoted 4k labour from MV developments to do the work + 2k for a s3/a3 quattro.

Have you thought of investing and tuning a big boys toy? RS4, RS6 maybe a noble?

To be honest I don't really rate the B7 RS4 as a tunable car, can only really put superchargers on them and struggle to get them over about 450 (ish) AFAIK

An R32 turbo at 650BHP is much more appealing :D

A guy which talks sense :) these types of cars (especially the noble) would be my choice as a second weekend car

Noble's are cool, although I have had a look at going down the Porsche Turbo route.

As far as RS4 tuning goes forget the B7 and new B8, B5 is the only way for big power
Only problem with a porka is it makes me think 'ponce' even if it was lightning fast
Any top of the range car especially if already charged falls into the realms of big big power when tuned
Although R32 turbos sound amazing as i said previously i wouldnt expect you to be able to keep the leon as it would be a very similar car with less power
If its only a weekend car why not buy an atom, much faster
As far as the 4wd conversion, i dont expect the mechanical side to be rocket science and the only reason theyve quoted 4k is due to the labour
If you were to buy an S3 as i did you could learn to weld to the rest of the chassis which would be scrapped
Cant remember whereabouts in the country you are but if you want i can teach you on the rest of the S3 i have left

B5 Audi is getting on a bit now that is the only problem. I agree with you on the Porsche front to some extent but you could say that of all cars 30k+ it's probably more of a jealousy factor than anything IMHO.

I need to think about it really, might have a look at going the 4wd Leon route and slap a gt35 on it in the ever increasing target for MORE POWER!!! Lol

I'm located south of the M25 which is quite a way from you afaik but thank you for the kind offer. Might take an evening class in welding!

James I really don't think it would take you long to get the hang of welding. You have come so far with the build as it is. Making the leon 4 wheel drive I believe would be your best option simply because I know how much enjoy the car as it is and love working on it.

Car NEEDS a gt35, too slow at the moment :p

My cam plan has taken a bit of a set back. Was planning on getting myself a set of IE cams in November when I'm in the US for thanks giving but after a chat with IE it appears these cams won't be coming back into stock for a while (1st 1/4 of 2013!) booooo!

Will do mate, i've got relatives and friends that come over from the US quite a lot so would be a good oportunity to save on the VAT as well.

I like the Porsche idea. Would love one some day.

Yer I really like them as well, they do have a certain **** factor about them sometimes though but I think that is a lot down to a jealousy and sterotyping IMO.
