Not as yet, my downpipe is a two piece design so it will be easy to pull it off to investigate. It's another job on my list.

Is it commen to have problem with the ihi conversion..

Is there a better option that gives you the same horsepower than the ihi vf 34 ?

Yeap my APR Stage 3+ uses GT28RS....340BHP/330LBS :D.....


or a similar set up using this turbo and quality manifold and injector/mapping.

The GT28RS on mine is spooling strongly at 2500rpm and at full chat at a smidge over 3K....lovely for the road.....I'll let you know in a few weeks what it;s like on track......pulls to 7500 too

Sounds good so its better to go for a garret turbo ?
Im curious what it does on track, and what about 0-60 and top speed ?
And dont forget money prices is there big difference in IHI en Garret conversion in price ?

The set up Ianb has would be quite abit more than getting IHI I would imagine. Not sure how where you are in the world may affect this but I doubt it'll be cheaper for you. IHI is good. Dont max it out and it will be a great road car for ocasional track use and can take some serious stick. Push it too hard power wise and you'll get probems.

All right.. yes im checking al availeble options.. When spending al this money i want 2 things be fast and have some way of reliability.

On vortex, they talk about APR stage 3+ being based on the GT2871R not GT28RS. your power figure looks more like 28Rs, but not knowing what boost its running to, it speculation on my part.

GT28RS on full race manifold, external 44mm tial w/g, gave 330bhp, 359lbft on a MK4 golf recently.

It seems a popular upgrade in US where people initially start with the APR Stage 3's running the 28RS then it is a simple bolt on upgrade with the 2871R.

APR will happily upgrade your map according Jim and the Vortex community.

Jim's TT was running this kit which gave 386 ATW's. He did discuss doing this on my car in the future but to be honest I find the current power and torque levels fine for the road in fact even with a diff and Goodyear F1's it needs to be tamed when engaging spirited driving.It seems the yanks are more obsessed than us with power!:rolleyes:

As for price for the drive in drive out option the APR kit isn't that far away from Jabba's IHI quote I had.

hooch - how much did your bore yours out by and what size pistons did you use, if you don't mind sharing such information

and if i was to bore it to a 1.9 would the gt2860rs be big enough to cope with the new displacement?

drivability... and the lack of fixation on 1/4 mile being the be all and and all.

Why would do you want to have to keep the thing on the boil rev wise when it always going to be limited by traction with fwd, on UK roads which are in the main diabolical (pot hole, camber wise). More tractable power, spooling sooner but sustaining that pull up the rev range is 'most' peoples want.. aside from a few who want the higher powered BT's and all that goes with them.

Bigger is most often as not Better...
