bill has a point, depends what you want the car for,if it's for everyday use,odd trackdays and sprints etc then powerband is very important. If like bill it's lots of track work then bigger the better really.
Don't expect a 18g to be massively more powerful than a vf34.

I could think of another engine on the other hand, which rattles with piston slap like you would'nt believe, consumes oil at an alarming rate,
lol sounds like mine,it's amazing when you hand over your hard earned to a so called proffesional company and they use a fully synthetic oil to run it in!miller oils love me:lol:i now need the bores de-glazing and running in again to solve it:cry:

Blimey, I thought most people were aware of using mineral oil to run in. Wasn't just a mistake by the garage...........although, it's to the same result. Warranty?

As for mine, I've had a talk with a few people. Nobody will go near my car to even get the most out of the vf34 due to my high mileage. I'm on 176000. Hardly any oil useage or noises that shouldn't be there. I've taken very good care of it (actually I was hoping to run it to 200000 just for kicks..........still might).
But, I do need a new turbo and it won't be another vf34, I don't trust them now.

So I need to rebuild. I guess I could keep the standard AGU pistons and forget about the larger bore, but I do all my own mechanics, so I save a fair bit of cash.

I'm happy with the power level I have for every day road use. I don't want a top mount manifold or a huge monster turbo. I need a similar one to mine that will last. I'm still on the idea of the 18g at the moment, but I take a look at the Owen development option as suggested.

18g only makes 30hp peak more than the vf34, but between 7-7.5k it's making more like 50 more.
Mines been on for 18 months now. Never had an ihi last more than 3.
As for fully synthetic for run in. Both my engines had it, but both had rings installed at the factory, and both saw full boost from 5 miles of being built. Neither ever used a drop of oil

If you nanny them the rings won't seat properly.

been like it a while now Bill, will get it rectified once i've got the funds.

is it glazed or ring gapped wrong or overbored slightly too far.
you 100% its bore glazing?

what are the symptums? (high oil consumption/heavy breathing?)

are you saying your VF34 has expired already?
those high boosts you were reporting would'nt have helped it any. (tiny bearings which overspeed easily)

keep the boost to 1.2bar, 1.4bar overboost and you should be ok... run harder/faster and their fragility of bearings becomes a failure mode

Pretty much yes. When I first got the car back all was fine (albeit with an injector leak). Boost was holding fine, logs good, happy bunny.

Then it started over boosting and whistling with it. Software is the same, no changes made to the setup at all. It had also adapted.

Now if you gradually press the throttle to the floor boost holds fine, but anything a little spirited it overboosts like crazy and whistles like your grandfather whistling a tune in his shed.
At anything under 22psi it doesn't make weird sounds at all.

Still, it isn't right and I want shot of it.

I have the same problem mate if i start from low revs it goes to and holds 1.4 but if i cane it it shoots to 1.8 and drops to 1.2 , jbs fixed a boost leak and said something about the actuators ????
