Hi guys planning on changing my inner cv joint on me FR tdi 150 and was wondering if anyone has done it themselves on here.... Got the part and doesn't look to technical! (I used to be a mechanic and am currently an engineer) so don't think I haven't got no experience on a car at all lol
Just nerve changed one on a VAG group car/gear box....??
Any advice /thoughts Would be appreciated

Many thanks

Are you using genuine items? If not then be prepared to do the whole thing again at some point, i'v not yet been told of a decent inner CV manufacturer other than the top brands, if it's an original replacement like the passat and other vag cars i'v seen, then the bearings will be 360 type and the housing that bolts to the gearbox is open at the back, you need to slide the boot on then the housing, then the bearings get slid onto the shaft with driveshaft all the way through housing, circlip goes on and then you can fit the bearings into the housing and put the blanking plug onto the back to seal it up, pack it with grease and then fit the rubber boot and metal bands

The reason is the bearings run on a surface that narrows towards the driveshaft shaft and the bearings can't slide straight in or out of the housing, combined with the 360 bearings they handle their application much better than cheap copies like J&R driveshafts stuff, if it's at J&R kit then the boot goes on the shaft followed by the bearings that then slide into the housing pack with grease and fit rubber boot.

I fitted a set of J&R inner cv's onto my stage 2 Passat TDI and it lead to me doing this ....

I was looking for a hurrendeous shake whilst on the throttle that shook the whole car, the inner CV's felt fine when in the air and when on its wheels there was only very slight play, I tried everything else and in the end replaced the DMF trying to cure this issue as it had done 120k miles by now, and running stage 2 was giving it some abuse, none the less after all the agro of pulling the car apart to change the DMF it didn't cure the issue, nearly ready to burn the car I purchased a set of S/H driveshafts for £50 on eBay, fitted them and the problem had disappeared, they where 3 months old if that, to say I was pissed was an understatement.

Well.... Seeing as this is a J&R one Iv got to fit I don't really want to be reading that lol oh dear mate that sounds horrendous... My DMF is already on the way out also... Hopefully this will cure the vibration/ noise iv got now for a bit and maybe end up selling the car.. Who knows! Yea it sounds like the same type as the Passat mate with big 360 bearing and cups etc..! Hopefully the weather is ok tomoz to have a bash... Noticed on the bearing face on one side it's stamped "R", does this mean that ace is towards the right hand side of the car do you know...???

To get the old cv off, belt a screwdriver through the blanking plug at the back and lever the plug off that way, be prepared to get covered in crap obviously.

Not sure regarding the markings, pretty sure it's makes no difference, as the J&R shaft I fitted didn't have swivel type bearing, not 360 as mentioned earlie

Basically the OEM bearings spin round like the ones in the J&R kit, but the J&R one are fixed on one axis, OEM ones can move on different axis to a certain degree giving it that better ability at handling movement, some people have been fine with J&R and I think there outer CV's aren't too bad, but I was seriously peeved with there inner CV's

Ok mate, thanks for that advice I will certainly take it on board!! I can't see a photo attached to that last message mate, getting covered in crap is expected lol, can I do it with the driveshaft in situ or have I got to take the whole shaft out to do it....
The one I've got is this eBay item number 170931117848
Have a look and see if that's the same type as you had mate .??

No it's not that type thankfully, hopefully you have no issues with the type your fitting

The Passat set up is different and looks like this

I'v not personally fitted that type before but it should be pretty obvious and if you get the car high enough safely to work under then I see no reason why you couldn't leave the driveshafts in the hubs, but just be careful of how much of an angle you put them at as some can be damaged by twisting too much.

Yea that what I was thinking mate, thanks for the advice! Hopefully goes smoothly n I reckon it can be done in situ when it's high enough, Iv had the shaft out before when I replaced the turbo on the car last year..! Will update tommorow.. Either job done or car on fire lol

Cheers mate
