Ibiza Mk5 1.4 TDi Ecomotive - Massive engine problem

Hello all,

I own two Ibiza 1.4 TDi Ecomotives. One is a Mk4 (2008) and is fantastic and the other is a Mk5 (2010) which has a huge problem with its 3-cylinder engine. I will describe the symptoms in case anyone else has suffered or heard of similar problems. I will also describe my experience with Seat UK and with my local Seat service centre.

When I drive the car, the engine warning lamp comes on and stays on. In addition, occasionally the glow plugs heating warning light flashes when I'm driving, accompanied by a huge loss of power and sometimes I also get the diesel particulate filter light.

The engine is noisier and more underpowered than it is supposed to be. When I accelerate the car judders alarmingly and black smoke belches out of the exhaust. The mpg is between 38 and 45 instead of being in the high 60s. The car feels sluggish.

All in all the engine is very poorly.

I took the car to my local Seat dealer (Castlegate in Norwich). First they said the engine oil was too high. They drained some of the oil, cleared the faults and returned the car to me. 8 miles later the lights were flashing like fairyland on the dashboard and all the other symptoms had returned.

Now after 6 hours exploratory work they say they have still not fixed the problem. They want to charge me £320 and return the car to me in the same broken state!!

They have said that the diagnostic tools revealed that the car has a turbo overboost AND a turbo underboost (Impossible). They also mentioned that some of the diesel may be entering the sump.

They said they can continue trying to find out what the problem is, but it would cost me by the hour, and might end up with an engine stripdown and an additional bill of £3.5k !!!

I do not have an open chequebook, and I am rather miffed at having to pay to get my car back in the same condition that I took it in. I expect to take my car in and get it fixed when it is with the authorised repairer and that they should know how to fix it. I contacted Seat UK and they were not interested in my problem despite the car being only 4 years old and not long out of warranty.

Has anyone else had this engine trouble? Is there an automotive ombudsman or office of fair trading that I can contact? Any advice gladly received :-(

A friend in the automotive business (working for another brand) has pointed me towards the Motor Codes Service & Repair Code. Does anyone know if Seat dealers subscribe to this?

It is possible to have over boost and under boost logged in the fault codes

It sounds to me like you have a turbo problem to be honest

On tdi's its pretty common for the turbo to soot up and the vanes start sticking causing under boost and over boost

You can clean them out a trick on the 1.9 tdi audi I had was to clean the turbo with Mr muscle oven cleaner it removed all the soot and it would work great till they soot up again

Did all the lights come on as the problem started?

Hello Stu_M. Thanks for replying. The engine lights came on soon after the problem first materialised. The engine warning lamp came on first and the other two only come on occasionally.

Thanks Stu_M. I am going to get my car back from Castlegate Seat tomorrow, pay off the £320 bill and take it to the local garage in my village pointing them towards cleaning up the turbo and DPF. Pretty sure their hourly rate will be more pallatable!

Thanks for your advice :)

It really gets up my nose when these so called "SPECIALISTS" get paid a bloody fortune to "GUESS" at what is wrong.

Complete Joke !!!!!!!!

Quite agree Deano. I work for a car company (Lotus Cars) and our customer services manager was appalled to hear my experiences with Seat UK. Our dealer network are pretty varied in quality, but even the worst of them treat customers better than this.

I have two Seats (a settee) but Seat UK didn't even accept this as brand loyalty and offer me any assistance. They simply wiped their hands and said it wasn't their problem.

I quite liked my Ibizas, but I think I'll look elsewhere if I can ever sell this car!

I have a brand new 1.2 FR and had a little problem and was told they took it for a drive and couldn't see a problem

I got in the car and it had the same mileage as when I drove in so after going else where with a armed with a printout of the problem I went in and hit the roof big time

car sorted rather promptly!!
