this is really harsh luck? no sort of warrenty or anything from where you bought it? will they not pay for what you've had to spend on replacing bits? minus the starter motor of course lol

I didnt see anyone mention this, might be my bad eyes!

You say you have replaced the rotor arm, but what is the distributor cap like? In particular is the carbon rod smooth and not broken? that can give you intermittent starting/running issues.

and with the coil, check for cracks/scoring/white marks, they can be very small, if you havent got any of those and the car sometimes runs i think the coil should be ok.

I have replaced the coil with a new one and still no luck, its really weird, i will be driving along and all of a sudden it just cuts out, it wont start for 5 minutes then will? it does it at least once a day now and still cant get to the bottom of the problem, Its really annoying. No there isnt any warranty from the garage i bought it from, the car was a second hand trade in so it was a sold as seen basis, they did look at it but couldnt find anything, oh the dizzy cap is the only thing that i havnt changed and it does need replacing imo but everyone i have talked to said that that wouldnt be the problem, Anymore ideas???

have you actually changed the HT leads?
ive had a problem of intermittant dying/cutting out ,difficulty in gettting the car started and im hoping my problem is now cured by changing the leads ( one was sparking out/leaking the spark)

probably a relay, if it runs for abit then cuts out and wont start for 5 minute.

i would check/replace the ECU relay and the Fuel pump relay. as these can cause all kinds of problems.

just had the fuel pump relay checked and thats fine, works spot on, iv spent a small fortune on this car and no where nearing to solving the problem, and when you have 2 kids in the car and it cuts out going round a corner and all power steering goes its getting dangerous, i doubt it would be a blocked fuel filter otherwise the car would be starved of fuel completely?.

'Cuts out going round a corner'?

If it cuts out going round corners that suggests a fuel issue, as the fuel in the tank goes to one side, and the fuel pump is situated on the right or drivers side of the car.

If this is so then the fuel pump needs checking, and if you dont know how get your garage to do it as its potentially very dangerous.

Within the fuel tank, it could be a split in a fuel pipe, or a kink, when the fuel gets down to a certain level or round a corner goes below the split/kink and hence drop in pressure.

I had a similar problem on a golf, which wasnt a split or kink, and as I had the pump replaced with a second hand unit, probably was the pump working incorrectly.

Replacing the fuel pump is a swine unless you buy it enclosed in the plastic casing, i think gsf parts do one for about £80?

it cuts out anywhere it feels like, even on corners which is dangerous, i will have to book it in with a electrical specialist and go from there, then its time to sell unfortunatly when its fixed, as iv fallen out of love with the car, been nothing but a load of s:censored:t since i bought it [:@]

Hi mate

I know it is a pain and you are cheesed off, but its a quick check on the dizzy cap. The most important bit to check is the carbon rod in the centre on the inside, if its not smooth, or is broken it really will cause nightmares similar to the ones you describe.

Is the carbon rod okay?

Also check if the cap has cracks inside it, this can cause really bad issues.

Please let me know, not many things left to check so chin up!

thanks Robreidmotors for your reply. I have ordered a dizzy cap up and will get it tomorrow, i shall see how we go with it, i see that this is a very common problem with the seats and vw, as soon as i get the problem sorted i will post up on here exactly what it is, so anyone suffering the same as i have, wont need to go through the car with a fine toothcombe and spend lots of hard earned money, i will get me chin up and find this mother f:censored:g problem :)

Well i think we now know its a fuel issue!, one small saving grace.

I had a similar issue on an 8v golf, which i actually didnt fix when i sold it! However, I had done pretty much everything including electrics as you have done, plus ultrasonic injector clean, new fuel filter, fuel system cleaner, throttle body.

On this car it would sometimes cut out round corners when 1/4 or below on fuel, and had difficulty starting, from what i know of what i had done on that car, I would be thinking towards the fuel pump itself.

If you know its the fuel pump, I suggest a new one. However in the meantime it might be worth asking on here if anyone has a second hand one at a reasonable price which they know works just to try it?

Also, the things you have replaced, have you kept the old ones?, if so you could change them back and sell the new stuff you have bought to help with the cost!

And dont panic, very little left to check!

p.s once you get it right with all the work you have done the car will drive mint believe me, and it will all be worth it! Ebay have some fuel pumps for about £30 ish. Dont know how good they are, but if you can do it for around that price i think its a good one to do. Ive never bought a fuel pump but im sure some guys on here will be able to help. Also, try and get one already in the plastic casing around the metal pump, i wouldnt want to try to fit it otherwise, looks fiddly and easy to break!

However, petrol is nasty stuff, its no more than 30 mins to change the pump, however if you arent completely sure get a garage to do it.

well it cut out on the missis today and she may have found the fault believe it or not, when you switch the ignition on there is a buzz from the fuel pump, well when it cut out she said she went to start it but there was no buzz from the fuel pump, she kept on turning the ignition on untill she heard the buzz and it fired up fine, so does anyone have any ideas what that problem might be? :help:

Fuel pumps are tricky, but usually they are fairly quiet and smooth sounding.

I would hazard a guess that if its a 'buzz' imagine like a noise that sounds like its struggling rather than running smooth that your fuel pump may be on its way out.

Usually i would say fuel pump relay, however that has been replaced, so sounds like the pump is dodgy.

Also that if sometimes buzz and sometimes doesnt sounds like a temperamental pump?

Like i said before, without pressure/volume testing its difficult to be sure, and that would probably be the same price as getting a new one.

well when you turn the key it makes a sound like any other pump, but then sometimes it doesnt, the relay was tested at the local seat dealership and they said it was working fine, but it may be faulty, the thing is that the relay costs 20 quid and VAT on top, so more money
