As above I have been had[:@]. Just got home from work everything all fine then go to Tesco to meet my mum and help her shop. Once we get back to the cars I saw some fluid under my car and thought I was power steering fluid as it is leaking a but and got the bits at work to repair so thought nothing to it. On my way back to my mums which is like 2 mins from Tesco I saw the needle move over 90 degrees so I got worried got it back to the house and she was smoking under the bonnet and pissing coolant out of a metal hose out of the engine. So head gasket has gone :( [:@] I feel like a right mug as I have just bought it on Monday with a couple of little issues but nothing major and this happens he must have known this was going to happen and got rid of it quick.

I have spent so far about £500 on her this week on parts as I can get seat parts though my work so cheaper but that is still 500 with my discount. Now I have to pay to get the head gasket replaced I cant believe my luck the guy I bought it off had me good really has all the signs while I was there where good seemed nice and all that but as normal everything that is dodgy is in areas you cant see.

Tuesday I took it to my mates garage to get it up in the ramp to check this power steering leak out and he as got silicon seal all over the sump plug [:@] So he has stripped the thread and bodged it I am so low here and don't know what to do this guy is up cash and I am down cash big time [:@]

do some basic checks,
Do the fans work?
Is water returning into the header tank?
Are there any bubble or water spots in the oil, pull the dipstick and check?

It might not be the worst case scenario ,

Dont beat yourself up over it could just be a coincedence and as said may not be the HG. Are you certain its not the metal pipe thats failed?

I think it might be the metal pipe as I cant check the coolant as there is none in the car is totally empty of coolant wont hold any. Looked at the dipstick and there Is no coolant that I can tell in there so I have a chap coming round who is a mobile mechanic who did my mums bfs car and he seems to be good so see what he says. Sorry guys feel like a right mug.

Should have seen this when I bought it but there was no signs. :(

Head gasket failure is rare on the 1.8t. It could just be a shitty hose or clamp that's causes the coolant to leak. Just because its blown all the coolant out doesn't mean it's H/G failure.

Don't take this the wrong way but the car has obviously had a few issues which you've started sorting then it has leaked coolant (think it was power steering fluid)
However you've driven it to the point of cooking it possibly causing head gasket failure.
Although he may have taken a good price for it even with a leaking pipe and issues is annoying i'm afraid the gasket failure will be of your own doing

It happens, when I went to get mine everything seemed fine,
I drove it hard and there wasn't any issues, A week after buying it the clutch failed and was slipping so bad it was undriveable, The car over boosts due to the recon turbo so I need to swap or repair that.

Ive spent about £1k in 5 months.

If its the pipe im thinking it runs around the bottom of the engine so if its gone it will have emptied it. Do you have an undertray? Could something have knocked the pipe?

Im a keen enthusiast rather than expert but when ive had HGs go on other cars its not physically pouring out, more contamination of oil/water and or being burnt through the engine producing exhaust smoke..... fingers crossed you need a new metal pipe which are around 60 quid + vat.

No this was not my doing and I resent the implication When I got in on the ramp the only thing that was leaking was the sensor that comes off the power steering pump and trickled down that's it no coolant as I checked it when I bought it and was full I had another look when I got to work yesterday and was the same.

Wouldn't jump the gun.
These things happen. It could just be a coincidence.
As said, you brought the car with a couple of issues, the previous owner may not have known about the leak.
Just because a metal pipe has popped doesn't mean the head gaskets gone.
Get it diagnosed properly before you start ripping the car apart.

Hopefully it is the pipe it is going round the block which you can kind of see but there is so much in the way of these engines not much room lol. I do so hope that this is the pipe and I can get that through work but then you would have to strip a lot off to get to it.

Also, the issues you didn't pick up like the sump plug was glued in, is your own fault for not having the car checked/AA inspected.
Having a belly pan isn't an excuse either if it has one.
This is a harsh world and unfortunately money controls it.
Just grin and bare it.
Look on the bright side, once the car is fixed it should be fine and trouble free.
