How to change leds in dash cluster [Pic HEAVY]

Yeah I'm completely lost now, I think my soldering iron is burning the leds out when connecting them

Just be careful. Put a small amount of solder onto the points where you removed the old led. Then with tweezers hold the led over and then touch the solder that should take hold of the led fr you. Did you make a note of where the corner cut out was before removing the leds?

Looks well chum. I hate that ya cant proplery change the fuel and temp. I changed mine to blue and now you cant see the needles at night:cry: .. If i had one critisim of yours (if you dont mind me saying is you should have changed the nasty green light for your headlights). I done mine white. So much nicer. And the indicators to blue also. Looks 100 times better than the green.

Yeah I know! I'm going to lower the fuel & temp canal then only replace the inner leds on both so hopefully it will be a red needle and ice white dials :) like the mains. And I do agree with you, I will also change the headlight bulb to blue to match my hids :) I'm lovin it, thanks for the help . :)

Sorry the pictures un-clear but my plan is to extend the canals ( arrowed in red ) nearer to the bottom replacing the outer led ( arrowed in blue ) with a ice white led angling it slightly away from the canal/needle

That's my plan anyway :):)

*I had to take the link out because i have less than 15 messages...

@supersticky tried to p.m you but because i am new I was unable to or at least I haven't figured out a way.

The question I want to ask you is where you got your dials from. I am asking you this because I will be taking my car back to the UK and in order for it to meet UK spec I need to change KPH to MPH. I have found the TDi version 6000 RPM but only the 140MPH and I need the 160 MPH like yours.

I have spoken to Lockwood but they want 180 GBP + VAT in order to do a custom job.

I hope I am not being too forward in asking where you got yours from.

Cheers

Hi mate why not just buy a set of used uk TDI cupra / fr clocks and transfer the dial face over, very easy mate and a lot cheaper! 30-50 pounds. Have a peek mate

Check out this item I found on eBay: pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=231102957698&alt=web should work fine bud.

Cheers.

I will probably get one... so that I have a spare one too... found a page in Bulgaria that do them for 60€ but once again they do not have mine...

Just bought the new clocks off ebay... after giving it thought it is probably the best option. I will switch over the dials as I have white leds on mine with red needles to go with the rest of the car otherwise i would just switch the whole cluster and pair it.

Cheers for your help supersticky!

No worries  Good work mate, tis the best and cheapest way :D good luck mate. You done the fuel and temp LEDs as well?

I was going to, but at the end I decided not to.

The others were a doddle to change, but the temp and fuel are smaller smd and I do not really have a steady hand so was worried about wrecking the dials.

Going to wait and see how the look at night in red before deciding on changing them or not. They should look like this (courtesy of original thread opener JoshDoubleYou) but I have left the LCDs in red and all warning lights in the original colour.

Just noticed that you had them the same... thought I had seen that colour somewhere... but was sure it wasnt with the blue LCD's. Didn't think to scroll up... doh!

They way I do it is...

First I upload them to a picture server like

http://photobucket.com

or

http://tinypic.com/index.php

And then once it is uploaded, they will give you a link to that image similar to:

http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/joshwaudby/DSC_5186_zpsb12b37fb.jpg

or

http://i59.tinypic.com/1128m7o.jpg

Then once you have those links, you post a reply and on the screen where you write you message you click on the yellow icon that looks like 2 mountains and a sun which will pop-up a window where you copy and paste the link from before. The quick reply doesnt have that function I believe.
