high temp,help!!!

just on my way home today in the lc when i noticed the temp gauge rising.then it hit 120 and the red light started flasing and beeping at me.
lucky i was just pulling into my road so stopped straight away.
the fans came on and are working fine.the water is at the normal level and it doesnt seem to be as hot as the gauge is saying.
dont really want to drive it untill i know what it is.could it be a temp sensor up the wall or has anyone had the same problem and know what it is

just been to get it checked out and its the trusty old water pump!
been quoted £320 for a new pump and timing belt fitted including vat.is this a good price?
also ive heard gsf do a metal bladed pump.am i better off asking him to use one of these as he said he will replace it with a original seat (plastic) one.dont want the same thing happening again really.the cars only done 52k

yeah, go for the metal impeller if possible, saves worrying about it again
