Hesitant starting and high idle

Went out in the wife's 02 Cupra tonight, quick ten minute run then parked up. When I went to restart it a few minutes later it took a good few seconds to fire up, and then idled at about 2k revs. Turned the ignition off but it continued to run on for a few seconds. Started it up again with the same hesitancy and high idle, although this dropped down to just over 1k after I blipped the throttle.

Anyone any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Exactly the same thing happened to me tonight!

It took longer than normal for car to start up and then revs rose to nearly 2000 and held for around 10secs and then went back down to normal 1000rpm idle

Did you find out what the problem was?

I have a tank of 95 ron fuel in there at the moment and the engine is definitely not liking it! I hope its only this which is causing the problem

Must be a sphincter squeezing experience everytime you put the NOS on :drive2: bang and no warranty :bleh:

Started car numerous times today and all was fine. Hopefully a 1 off!

Car isn't liking the 95 crap i have in there at the moment though! Hesitates and stutters :censored:

Engines handling the gas fine, had no problems in 6mths use!

Touch wood

This has been happening with my Leon Cupra over the last year, and now it is getting more and more regular. Have not got a clue what it is, and every time I have taken it to the garage for them to check it out with the diagnostics it never happens!
Would really like to know what it is if anyone has any ideas.

Cheers

I used to get something similar on my old car. After a long drive, trying to restart the car after a few times proved difficult and it stalled once it did start. Waited a few mins, and it started up fine. Happened about 4/5 times over ownership.

I think it's just one of those things. If it's not a common thing, I wouldn't worry about it :)

I had the same problem with an older car of mine and it turned out to be the starter motor. There was a slightly dodgy connection that was made worse when things heated up. The only way to get it started was to short it or to wait until everything was cold again.
