I need help. I had a track day on Thursday. Everything went ok. Car drove great and with the excpt of boiling my brake fluid which is standard stuff I was happy. Drove home no issues. Went to car today and drove to work. Noticed nothing. Then . . . .

Basically wen the car is cold it is starting to smoke a lot. Seems to go away once warmed up but definatly somethng not right. Plugged the scangauage in no error codes show. Drives fine pulls fine

What could it be? I am worried it's my turbo on ts way or is it a boost leak? Can't see nothng wrong with the map reading on scan gauge. All does as it use to.

I am stumped

please help

If you could smell oil then it means the engine is burning oil. So possibly a oil seal of some sort, possibly turbo oil seals.

Not always, could be head gasket or valve guide oil seals, could even be a blocked crank case breather.

The OP needs to find out what sort of colour the smoke is and if there are any boost leak noises first.

Ill get a video of the smoke tomorrow

Couldnt smell anything and i think the smoke was a white / grey but video will confirm

what are simple things to check?

Maf Sensor?
EGR Valve?
Boost Leak?

the strange thing to me is its drives fine and once warmed up i couldnt see any more smoke.

what if my cat has gone would that cause more smoke and more importantly is the smoke then condensation :S

Noticed on the scan guage that the smoke when i went for a test drive the Air intake temp was 31 to 33 degrees outside temp was 22.5. could the heat have something to do with it. is this temp the norm or is something else a miss.

Thanks for all your help :)

Could be a cracked mani which is classed as a leak. It would leak when its cold but when it heats up it will seal up.

My good friend's handy tip to diagnose what's coming out the exhaust:

Hold a bit of paper towel to the exhaust when the cars running (probably from cold for you as that's when you've got probs) Then Examine; Look to see if there's spots of oil on the paper towel, that'll indicate oil (obviously), if it's just wet then it's prob just condensation, if it smells of fuel/smokey then it could indicate overfuelling so perhaps a boost leak.

Secondly (this might not ring true for a TDi but I don't see why it wouldn't be any dif??) - If the car is smoking on heavy acceleration it would suggest turbo seals, if it smokes on the overrun then it would prob suggest valve stem seals? But as you're saying it seams to solve itself on warm it would prob rule out valve steam seals as the oil only gets thinner when warm so passes by worn seals easier...

gonna love me.. another update.

Checked oil and its stilll full so thats a good sign

been speaking to Sparky who use to be on here and he think its might be a build up of diesel in the exhaust system from thrashing it about and its slowly burning it off

what do you all think?
