Help another Gearbox Question - New to Forum

Hi there,

I have a 1998 1.9 TDI AHU Cordoba. As part of its 80,000 service though I would change the gearbox oil to be extra careful. Changed it with 80W/90. It is now stiff when cold in first and second gear. First thoughts were that the oil was too thick, so phoned SEAT garage and they have mentioned that there are 3 types of gearboxes in this model. They phoned SEAT UK to get the right gearbox type, and Oil, but I now do not trust them. They have lost the details, and now say that it only needs one litre to re-fill and that it is generic VW/SEAT oil.:wtf:

Does anyone have any information that may help to get the right oil in the gearbox, 5 speed manual. SEAT UK's phone number? Oil types?, anything.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

As far as I know there are a few gearbox codes , but the part number for all the 5 speeds are 02J
So it is an 02J gearbox

From Haynes manual there are 3 types of manual transmissions and these are 020, 02A and 085.

085 - gearbox type number is engraved around the opening for the left-hand driveshaft, between the oil filler/level and drain plugs: its individual three-letter code and the date of manufacture are engraved on the top of the clutch bellhousing, next to the clutch release lever.

020 - gearbox type number is cast on the webs around the opening for the left-hand driveshaft, just above the oil drain plug: its individual three-letter code and the date of manufacture are engraved on a flat on the bottom of the clutch bellhousing.

020A - gearbox type number is cast on the webs around the opening for the left-hand driveshaft: its individual three-letter code and the date of manufacture are engraved on a flat on the top of the gearbox housing, beneath the clutch release cylinder/mechanism.

The lubricants and fluids area states Gear oil, viscosity SAE 75W to API GL5.

Can't find any reference to 02J in the Haynes anywhere.

02J wasn't used until the Mk3 Ibiza.... so that's out

the 085 is too weak for the diesel, and I think so was the 020

I've only ever seen TDi's with 02A cable change gearboxes... and yes, they need more than 1L to fill (more like 3L)

085 up to 26/2/96 3.1L, from 27/2/96 2.7L
020 2L
020A 2.1L
Courtesy of Haynes again and not a 1 litre capacity in sight - someone is talking rubbish at SEAT (according to Haynes).

As an aside you can get a Haynes manual off ebay for about £10 and is a very good investment if you have an older motor. I have only had my car for a few weeks now and it has more than paid for itself in info and peace of mind in checking out potential problems that are not really problems at all.
