Grinding brakes???

Not sure how to describe this one, as its something i've never come across before...

On the odd occasion, when lightly touching the brake pedal, the pedal vibrates violently, and the brakes make a sound similar to a grinding sound. The car stops in its normal way but the vibrations and the grinding sound are a bit of a worry... can anyone enlighten me on whats going on?

sounds like you might have worn your brake pads down to the metal backing plate....

I'd get them checked out ASAP mate.

Is it the front brakes you are referring to?

most probably the fronts, but could also be the rears....

Could there be any other possibilities? When I press the brake pedal sharply, it gets rid of the noises for the majority of the journey

not sure, but I'd get it down a garage asap and get it checked out.... brakes aren't something worth risking in my opinion.

i see your point, and i will get it looked at ASAP. i'm just trying to work out whether it's going to be an expensive problem or not... i'm praying it will be something quick and easy like a pedal spring, but that grinding noise doesn't bode well...
