Look good on the car

They fit fine at one end, its just there is a "notch" at the other end that fits over the wing. Its fine, just a little "high" so they sit a little high at one end. Photos should show this. This "notch" can be widened with just a little cut but I've gone off them a little bit!

Open cone filter

So, I've been running the Green filter for about a year now (I think) and fancied trying an open cone filter on the FR. I had one on my old car (Citroen AX) and it sounded the business on full throttle so with the added bonus of turbo and DV on the 20VT lump... well I just had to give it a go! Hellfrauds finest universal filter, £26 bargain! You can just about spot my improvised cable-tie support holding the weight of the filter on the strut brace. Its not permanent, just need to make up some sort of bracket to support the weight as it pulls the standard TIP down a bit! Thinking cap on...

Sounds quality with the open cone... I thought it wouldn't make much of a difference from the drilled airbox and Green filter but it does! Very good sound. Really hear the turbo sucking now and the DV working! Just have to secure it properly now.

Just need it mapped now, Mike. You know you want to ;)

If they fitted better, I think those indicators would look pretty smart! Might look into them myself actually! ;)

And I've heard lots of people saying that with a diesel you shouldn't get open cone filters, can't remember what reasons where, but damages the engine somehow? But only diesels, not petrols. You had any problems so far?

You can have them if you want them! ;) No problems so far! I don't think it would cause any problems on either petrol or diesel. Its only replacing the filter element with the open cone design. Makes more sense on a petrol as you get some good noise from the turbo and DV. I guess the diesel won't sound so good?

I had an open cone on my 1.4 ibiza, and ended up getting heat sync because I hadn't thought about how I'd stop the hot air from the engine getting in.

I'll try find the threads, but I've come across a few now which advise against getting an open cone filter for a diesel. I'd love to have one on though, I miss the sound of my old petrol!

Lol, I'd want ones that fit properly! Where yours made specifically for your mk4 ibiza? Or where they universal kind of ones?

Its a universal one so it comes with varioud adapters to fit different sized MAFs. It fits great and I just need to knock up a support to hold the weight. If you buy a bespoke filter it would come with all the bits necessary but this is much cheaper and does just a good a job. It sounds great too! :funk:

Heat soak isn't really an issue as the air is going through a mega-hot turbo and compressed (which heights it anyway) and then on through a inter-cooler. Not noticed any performance issues and I have just taken it for a good fast back-road run!

Hmmm, good point about the turbo and intercooler! What sort of cost are the universal ones? As the ones made to fit are about £70 +!!!

Just wait till you get a Forge TIP (and remap ;)), Mike. The spool up sound is so addictive with the open cone filter

Its even louder with the Miltek down pipe, too :D
