Wonder if anyone can help please. My Altea appears to have a gearbox problem and it needs to be replaced. A new one is £1500 so thats out - its a company owned car and at 3 1/2 years old & 80k they're not interested. Normally I wouldn't give a jot but I want to buy it, so I've been looking at second hand gearboxes for when its mine - they go for about £400 with a 3 month warranty but even though they're all 02Q 6 speed, there seems to be different codes, mine has a HDU code, I would like to know what the differences are. I assume some are ratios/final drive, but I couldn't really give a toss as long as it bolts up to the block, shafts & linkage fit correctly and the mountings fit correctly, ie fits into the car and is drivable with no problems. Anyone any gearbox code details???
Cheers, Colin.

Different codes will relate to final drive ratios, so if you put the wrong one in you might find you're doing 3000rpm at 60mph in 6th gear. Not good for fuel economy or driveability.

Different transmission codes fitted to the 2.0ltr 140bhp Altea at differing times are...
  1. GNE
  2. HDU
  3. GRF
So I tentatively presume that one of those would be the same. You may find that there's a difference in other ways though, such as the MFD may not function if the gearbox doesn't have the necessary connection for speed sensors etc. and the GRF transmission was fitted to the Reference, but not the Stylance. If anything that would be the one with anything likely to be missing.

I agree but £1500 is not good for my pocket either!!!! Any idea where I could get the info for ratios? There's a JMA code gearbox on the bay out of an 07 Leon 2.0 TDI, how different is it going to be for an Altea 2.0 TDI??? Bloody silly if you ask me - never had this sort of crap in the good old days!!!

just looking at diff alone for ratio checks

GNE/HDU/JMA all use a 70/19/24 (3.68) diff but listing 2 different part numbers

GRF uses a 69/20/25 (3.45) diff

Cheers guys! Impressed with the rapid responses!!! Is there anywhere/link I can go that gives all the codes/ratios/details, etc? Obviously there must be other VAG group cars with this 'box?

just to confirm HDU (not HDV) and bear in mind these are 'Build dates' not registration dates so cars maybe at least a few months newer than the dates listed if not more

chassis number will tell me if you need to check any out

:Seat:
Altea (08/04-05/06)
Leon (07/05-05/06)
Toledo (9/04-06/06)

HDU transmission code on my 05 Altea TDI Sport 140 BKD engine. Etka show for mine:

Part number:

02Q 300 041 C - 6 speed Manual transmission - Remark:70/19/24 - model: HDU JLT KDM

Also listed:

#02Q 300 040 GX - 6 speed Manual transmission - Remark:70/19/24 - model: HDU JLT

send me your VIN number via PM and I could check for you.

Yep HDU is your Transmission Code. Etka lists the same parts number as mine in the previous post. hope that helps. The second number has a # in front of it. not too sure with that as I am no Etka Expert.

you could ask David over in the Seremotors forum about that.

Cheers for that Si, I had a print out from the dealer this morning showing it was a HDU 'box. What I need to know is the differences with the 02Q 'boxes as I intend to buy a 2nd hand 'box and perhaps won't be certain what VAG car its come out of.

the # means the part is also available as a service exchange unit so you will have to return the old one - usually a surcharge paid until it is done so

usually cheaper than a fully blown new one and the X at the end is usually a giveaway at times too
