gear box problem

Hi people! Sorry, i know it's my first post and i'm already asking questions, lol. But last night i was acelarating to join to the M40 and went to change from 3rd to 4th when my gear box jammed in 3rd. No matter which gear position you drop the gear lever in to it is still in 3rd. Even neutral has dissapeared. I have to dip the clutch and switch off the engine to stop! Trying to find out if anyone has had the same or similar problems before i pay a fortune at Seat!

Could be anything? Is it a 6 spd box? It could as simple as cable snapped disconnected if cable operated gear shift? Upto a knackered box?

Can you see cable linkages moving (if its that type) on top of gearbox in engine bay? While someone moves lever for you?

The gear linkages seem to be working! The spring lever which is on top of the selector, which is on top of the gear box is moviing back and forth as it should. But the 3rd gear will still not dis-engauge. How ever, when you put it in reverse the switch will still register and turn the reversing lights on! Very strange! I have a feeling though that as the linkages are moving the selector spring, that it's probably internal to the gear box! Just thought maybe someone had come across the same problem before!
