My average MPG dropped recently into the 30's when I was using Millers sport additive and now that ive stopped using it im getting decent figures again...

50% slow start-stop dual-carriage way
40% town driving
10% faster dual-carriage way
A mixture of pootling granny-style and the odd crazy speed run....

With this im getting an overall average of 42mpg but can can frequently get 48-50mpg on my 15 mile trip to work before the last couple of miles in town ruin it!

Well firstly at 11k miles or so your car is still bedding in. I got mine at 9k miles and the mpg has greatly increased with age and distance travelled...She definately is feeling more run in. I have also noticed that my car loves Shell Extra (not tried v-power derv yet!) and not so much BP ultimate.

Adjust your driving style, like unclefester said, in town driving you rare need to go above third gear. I tend to stick to the rule 2nd for 20-30, 3rd for 30-40 and depending on mood will keep in third for some spirited driving or knock into 4th for nice bit of cruising at 45mph-50mph. Ease into your gears aswell and gradually speed up increases your mpg....I am sure you know this stuff anyway...:)

I've had enough of worrying about MPG and I'm seriously considering a petrol do to my 600 mile commute a week.

If only they did a PD170 TT.

Cheers, I did search for Vented but it returned over 3 pages full of threads, most of which I checked and people were just mentioning Vented not what it is, if someone could just confirm if it is presing the black knob so you get extra fuel in that would be great ;)

OK I drove to Tywyn by Snowdonia today to look at a car for the missus, now this was about 115 miles each way, from Newport up through Abbergavenny, Brecon Beacons, onto Rhayder upto Machynlleth and across to Tywyn right on the coast.

This was all A roads, most of them single mountain roads up and down, nice drive on a great day, filled up a vented tank with Shell normal diesel and did between 40 - 70mph depending on roads and traffic (bank holiday old twits) I did 200 miles and the needle was just under the full mark so had hardly moved.

I got an average of 46.8 MPG for the whole 232.8 miles with 460 still showing on the range and the needle is now exactly half way between full mark and 3 quarter mark :)

So getting good MPG and by the looks of it my low return normaly on a tank is simply down to my journey type.

The car we went to see however was not as described and I was not happy as it took 7 hours in total [:@]

I have had varied MPG latley but blamed the fuel as I had been trying a few, now settled at about 42-44 ish, 50MPG doing about 50ish for some miles but with the big boot in 40-42 . I think the fuel is very critical than many others think, best cheep fuel I have used is ASDA, very constant. Tesco crapest but cheepest. Shell best normal priced ESSO crapest. Just got to shop about.

i always find that coasting along just touching the acc shoots the mpg way up to 200 odds
that brings the average up over the course of the journey
