Faulty dual mass flywheels

Can any of you guys give me some more info on faulty dual mass flywheels and the symptoms?

My car is shaking at certain speeds and seems to stop when I come off the accelerator, DMF has been suggested.

What symptoms would likely point to a failing DMF? I have a DSG box (presume the Seat equivalent is called the same thing).

Would it still shake in neutral?

Would it shake throughout the rev range? Or more at certain RPM's?

Would it be noisy?

Any help will be much appreciated!

Ive got a faulty DMF, basically it rattles and vibrates bad on biting point, also vibrates and shakes the car more noticeable on idle

Really hoping its not the flywheel!

They are a bit of a ball ache to diagnose at the best of times but dead giveaway signs are:

chattering/chopping noises from the gear box

vibrations through the clutch pedal

possible difficulty to select gears

General heavy vibrations through the car on idle

the only definitive way of checking is to remove the gearbox and see if there is any movement in the centre piece of the flywheel, if so it wants replacing - preferably with a new clutch.

Don't put it off for too long as I've seen the flywheels collapse, springs poke out of the housing then eventually chop the bell housing to bits - which means either a new box or casing.

The dsg boxes use the same flywheels as the manual boxes if that's any help, the only flywheel I've seen die on a dsg was on a skoda taxi with 250000 miles on it.

hmm, i would like to know how many have failed. took my dsg in for a service and they said its a part that can fail, then again he had only seen one on a golf gti which he said shot out and did a bit of damage. he got me worried but at about £1000 to replace im tempted to take the chance! mine has 60k on the clock.

to be honest, i dont know what a normal one sounds like so cannot answer that, but it has been remapped to 180bhp so not at the limits of dsg gearboxes!

My rents have tdci c max with the same problem as you. It shakes on acceleration and at some speeds. No one knows what it is but its been doing it for 10k now and we've dragged a few cars around on trailers with it. So if you find out what it is then i'd love to know. We susspect it could be an inner cv joint but ford want £300 for a driveshaft and no one does an after market one. But we aren't willing to change any more bits especialy at that sort of money. Just hoping it'll let go so we will finally know what it is!!

To update, i've fitted a new EGR valve which has improved the car loads, and the shaking has also greatly improved.

Its still there though under full acceleration, but not as bad, so its going in to a specialist hopefully this week...i'll post up what they find!

I had my Altea XL TDI in for service and have been pointing out to them at the last couple of services a noise coming from the clutch at low speed when on full lock. They couldn't replicate the noise but when I collected the car today, it was making the noise, and the mechanic experienced it also.
Car is 3 years old in 2 weeks thus I am determined to get this fixed under warranty.
Mechanic has suggested that the noise is pointing to possible DMF but they need the car booked in for 2 days and need to remove the gearbox first.
I will keep you posted..
