Nail on the head mate! No ones disouting that paint discolours, blisters then ultimatly burns if it gets hot. But the point is, no one i know has ever had their engine get hot enough to do that, regardless of what car or what state of tune, or the weather for that matter.

Fact is, it was put there to reduce noise and bonnet temperature. Neither of which i really care about. By removing mine, all i've done is help cool the engine bay. Which we all know is good stuff :D

Sounds fair enough to me! Good for you, was never disputing you by the way ;)

surely the material will hold heat more than the bonnet skin considering there is air flow to wash heat away when driving?

not sure its quite as simple as that?

while the underside of the bonnet is taking the heat the top side is cool by the air resistance. yet after a thrash, the bonnet will usually be warm if not quite hot

very scientific :cartman:

it is getting a bit complicated now i reckon....

so ok, we've established that its ok to do it without fire or any major crisis so far. imagine how the poor little charge pipe feels sat on top of the engine!! lol

I can't belive this thread has gone on so long!!

I am sure something else would go within the engine bay before the paint went if it was that hot!

If you want to take it off do so and if your worried leave it - simple.

currently hull, then brighton!
Glad i found this thread, its put my mind at rest a bit.
just going for the big turbo upgrade and was concerned about engine bay temps, so what i am going to do is lose the dampening and get a set of Louvres pressed in to pull the hot air from the turbo area, if your interested see http://www.coollouvres.com/
means a respray though.

also to add to the 'will it wont it' paint argument, last summer i sprayed my engine cover red, also with no primer and it is still OK so if that survives i am sure the bonnet will, its been track abused on two occasions too.
