ECU problem??

Morning all.
A friend of mine has a Mk3 golf with a Mk4 1.8T engine in it.
He recently had the alternator give up,but need to move the car and decided to jump start it,however it
wouldn't hold charge.he continued to try and jump it.on one occasion the booster cables
were put on the battery the wrong way round and started to smoke.

Could this have caused a power surge and cause the ECU become corrupt or burnt out??
Any info much appreciated.

Unlikely, More than likely to have ruined the fuses and battery.

That's what I thought too.
A mechanic has apparently checked everything and feels the ECU is at fault.
I'm not convinced,any more options??

Wrong way cables i was always led to believe was a fried ECU.

LEE69,hi mate.
I've done some research on this and your right,worst case scenario is a fried ECU
but it is likely to fry wires and fuses first.Ahh well my mate sent the ECU away for repair anyway.
Didn't think that putting jump leads on the wrong way for a few seconds could cause so much damage.

Hi,

Just had similar problem with my car; TDiSE. Pulley came off alternator, damaging alternator in process. Had new alternator fitted, but now car won't start from cold. After numerous, expensive checks, I've been told ECU is probably at fault.

Mike - where did your mate send his ECU to for repair? Did it work after?
