My Greyhound goes in the back of my Leon Cupra, I have found that there is no need for a dog guard. I would recommend a boot liner, keeps the hair off the boot carpet.

I put my dog on the back seat of my LCR and I use a waterproof cover and blanket for her to sit on. I personally wouldn't bother with guards anymore as we use a 2-point harness for the dog, which clips onto the seatbelt. I can vouch this is much better as my dog walked away from an accident several years ago after my dad rolled & flipped his car with her in at 50-60mph, both survived with only minor glass cuts. If your dog is unrestless i.e. moves about alot as well it keeps them stuck in one place comfortably and doesn't stop it lying down either.

As for keeping the LCR clean it can be a pain but a wet cloth works wonders for getting dog hairs up.
